I posted this separate thread so as not to make light of an important subject. I hope this is one small step for a woodturner and one giant step for Woodturning and worthy of being added to the long dusty march of drying science as it warps ever onward toward a crack & split free world.
I weighed 165 lbs. before an alcohol soak last night. I mixed 2 1/2 oz. gin with 1/2 oz. very dry vermouth as a stabilizing agent. Then I immersed this drying agent in ice and stirred vigorously. An olive on a toothpick was added to speed up the drying process. I soaked overnight and this morning I weighed _167 lbs! In my haste to publish, I forgot to weigh the toothpick. The olive had less than 0.04% pimiento contaminant.
Probably not scientific because I forgot about Lori's antipasto followed by 2 links of mild Italian sausage with mushrooms and green peppers on a large plate of homemade pasta. I also presoaked myself with olive oil (cold pressed by 72 virgins) and sea salt and forgot to take my diuretic.
In summary then, I did not lose weight and I may not be dry, but I should be well preserved. I can't do a double blind study with controls for two reasons: No other turner is as ugly as I, and I don't mess around with wood alcohol. Yep, this is probably just another pretty anecdote and as always, your soak may vary.
