sharpening chisels

Jul 29, 2006 3 Replies

I know that some people send their saw blades out to be sharpened, but does anyone send out their lathe chisels? If not, is there a book or video showing the proper way to do it. TIA Joe

Joe,

Lathe chisels need to be sharpened several times per project so it would not be very convenient to send them out for sharpening. You can buy several jigs that will include instructions or videos on their use.

Your not gona get to turn much if you send your gouges out every day to be sharpened. One way has a couple of video's showing the wolverine system that show you a few things. My best advice is to find a local woodturning group and start that way. Skew's are pretty straight foward just 2 flat sides. Bowl and spindle gouges are straight foward until you decide you want an irish/fingernail grind. A couple of good places to start are here.

Hope something in one of these can help. Jim

You can get a very good video on sharpening from AAW
