Speed of lathe work?

If I were to purchase a lathe to make very fansy wooden roller or curtain rods, how long would it usually take the lathe to create one? And what is the average cost of a reliable lathe?

Thanks

Probably too long if you are comparing with commercial manufacturers. Very fancy with beads, etc. would hold up the curtain from sliding smoothly. You can do lengthwise fluting, however.

Well, I tried this once, chucked up a nice billet and turned the lathe on and waited. It was spinning nicely. I tried a few different speeds. But, the lathe must've been in a mood because it never created the spindle I had in mind. Ornery things, lathes.

Yep, sometimes they have a mind of their own :) Once I had a table leg on the lathe that turned out to be about 6 utensil handles!

I think it would be a waste of time to do that actual rod. You can buy ready made dowels for that. You should take the ready made dowel and turn your customized finials for the ends.

You'd have to be a bit more specific as to what you want in a lathe. Otherwise a mid range Oneway or Vicmarc would be the best for the job.
