staining segmented turning?

Hi; How do you stain segmented walnut and maple turnings ? If you stain the segments before glue-up you will just cut the stained portion away. If you stain after turning, will the stain not bleed from one wood to another? Thanks Bead_runner

Why would you want to stain walnut or maple? Why not use them taking advantage of thier natural colors. That said, I have dyed inlays in segmented turnings but you need to be able to remove the inlays. I did it by tacking the inlays in (lightly) with ca glue then turn and sand to completion.Next remove the inlays, dye (or stain) them and glue them back into the turning. It works fine but you must mark everything so they go back exactly where they came from so they fit correctly. They have to be marked where it won't show because once they are replaced you can't turn anymore. I only did this because I needed a special color (royal blue) and I don't know of any wood thats that color. In normal segmenting you really can't easily use stains or dyes. With all the colors mother nature has provided it would be an isolated case where you would need stain or dye.
