Startrite 352 bandsaw

I have recently bought a Startrite bandsaw and have a couple of questions that you guys may be able to help me with. First of all it kept cutting out when I cut out large blanks (5 inches thick and 10 inches in diameter) from some wet apple wood. Am I trying to make it work too hard or should it cope with this? Secondly I am not convinced that I am setting the blade right. Is it still possible to buy manuals for this model in the UK as I would like to be able to check that it is all set up as the manufacturer intended? TIA for any help. Ferdinand

Hi,

I'm not familiar with that machine in any detail, however I have owned and used a similar sized model and would guess that it cutting out* is not correct behaviour. If you are running a coarse enough blade (3TPI or so should do for 5" cut depth), and your blade tension and guides are set properly, it should not have any problems. The other variable is your feed speed, it should match the power available, the blade pitch and the wood.

As for a manual, G and M tools[1] claims that "We are able to supply most parts for the range of Startrite woodworking machinery." They may then have a manual available. However, I reckon one of the decent books on bandsaws would be a good or better substitute. I have Duginske's "Bandsaw Handbook" which is good for most aspects but focuses only on "cool block" blade guides. There's also a book by Lonnie Bird, which others may have an opinion on.

Hope that helps

Neil
