Turning tools?

Any of you turners using the tools from Lee Valley? Any suggestions as to brand names of tools? Should I purchase a complete set of tools or am I better with a begginers set?

I live close to Toronto, Canada, but apart from Lee Valley, I don't know many places to purchase accesories for turning. Any woodturners in the Burlington, Ontario area?

Thanks,

Blair

I'm using a couple of the Crown forged gouges they sell. Hope to complete the set this Christmas, as father's day is long past. The same name from any place will certainly be the same.

As others will be quick to say, what you buy depends on what you turn. A set which provides a couple of basic gouges, skews of two sizes and a parting tool will do for most spindle work. A bowl gouge of about 3/8 would be all you'd need to add to get into bowl turning. Unless you're in production, the quality of the cut will depend more on you than the gouge, so starting cheap is no problem.

Buy the best quality you can afford - that will keep you from paying for the same tool twice!

I like my Sorby tools. They stay sharp for a long time. They are also very comfortable to use. They are the right length and weight for me. I also have a full set of cheap tools from Craftsman that do the job too. I have to sharpen them more often, but they were great to have when I didn't have a clue about turning. I have a pen turning set from Crown that I use on occaision, but the quality is no where near that of Sorby.

I would buy one at a time and see how you like the brand. Unless the set is cheap there is no need to buy a set of tools when you only use 2 or 3 most of the time.

Have fun and be safe.

The LV seem fne to me.

Delta has a duplicator that I had been looking and and there is another usabele one, lots cheaper, at Busy Bee. Lets Go! I tried phoning you back and left a message. I will try again.

The Golden Horseshoe wood turners meet at General Brock HS in Burlington.

I have seen cheaper lathe tools and are near worthless.
