Wasn't Either Spring Nor Successful

Sometimes you just can't let go.It wasn't too bad after three days of thaw and rain - including thunderstorms - so I figured why not add a day to the rough season.

From approximately the same position as before. Went out after lunch in lieu of chores, and tried to salvage something from these stressed hard maple chunks. The brown hearts are always full of minute stress cracks, but I figured I'd slab off some of the bright wood and see what happened.

As you can see, the outside was free of radial checks, but the stress cracks ran almost to the surface. I turned away wood until I had a piece only about 2 1/2 deep, but couldn't turn the cracks away. Finally just stuffed some CA in, and hollowed the face. Even that wasn't particularly attractive, as you can see in the last picture. Did a pair this afternoon, but I don't expect them to be at all worthwhile. I've got the splits down on the concrete so the inside will dry faster, but it's not really a winning proposition.

Supposed to snow tomorrow, so maybe I won't be tempted any more....
