what is a treumbleur(french for trembler?) anybody have a suggestion or two on how I could stick a square box on the lathe, and turn it without marking it(I want to do some shapes turned into the top) also any ideas how I could hold it well, its 320mm long by 175mm wide by 160 high, and Id be trying to do it very off center as well(making 3 sets of rings accross)

I am just a bit worried, because I am planning to cut rings inside of rings and for part of it, the box will have maybe 200mm one way, and only 100 the other and I dont really want it to practice its flying techniques.

Make a "chuck" to provide extra support.
A wooden disk on a faceplate some 400-450mm diameter.
Glue and screw ~130mmx130mmx400mm blocks to the face of the disk, 200mm apart.
Drill and tap holes through the blocks, place 10mm x130mmx320mm boards inside the faces of the blocks, set your box in the middle, and use screws through the holes pressing on the 10mm boards to clamp your box in place. You could place additional blocks to clamp from the ends (to make them movable, hold them in place in the slot with screws from the side blocks).
Keep the speed down, especially when way off center.
A fair degree of effort, but it should work, and should not take more than a few hours to make.

's an example of one. I'm not personally fond of that type as it looksjust like an exercise in making beads, etc. on a long thin spindle insteadof the stepped "balls" types. I love the ones that Jean Francois Escoulenmakes and I try to make ones like those. They also tremble really well andlook/act fantastic.

Reyd, a trembleur is a long (up to 1m) and thin (2 mm) piece of spindle turning, with various shapes like bead and captive rings. I've written a page on my web site explaining how to turn this, including the instructions on how to make a string steady rest. It's for now only in French, but will soon be translated in English as is the rest of the site.
