yellow glue setup time

Most aliphatic glues recommend a setup time of 24 hours . I do a lot of segmented work and allow about 8 hours before turning and have had no problems. I just bought a book on segmented turning(William Smith) where the author made light cuts after ten minutes setup on segmented work! Has anybody done any tests on setup time at room temperatures? Manufactures are cautious due to liability and if strength at 99% can be done in a short time that should work for most woodworking.

I've been segmenting for 4-5 years and would say that turning within 10 minutes is kind of risky using yellow glue. I have however turned with tailstock pressure in 10-15 minutes but wouldn't recommend doing it. I use titebond 2 (PVA) exclusively and feel safe in 3-4 hours. I often turn in

1-2 hours but never to final. 99% would take a week or longer. In certain (most) conditions much longer. The only time I have encountered any problem is when the relative humidity is above 75%. Then the glue takes much longer to dry. My shop stays between 55 and 80 degrees and I don't see much if any difference in dry times unless the humidity goes way up. Bob, Naugatuck Ct.

Somewhere in the back of my mind the figure of 80% bond strength after 30 minutes comes up. Believe it is from an article in FWW a number of years back. Seems to be confirmed by my experience and the others who posted.

Guy, I know Bill Smith and have seen him demonstrate and yes he does do LIGHT cuts after only 10 minutes. It works for him but I have never tried it myself. Tony Manella
