A wonderful class!

X-No-Archive: yes

I've had three wonderful busy Saturdays taking a beginners weaving class with a superb teacher. There were five of us, four with absolutely no experience and one with a teeny bit. It's been so much fun. Technically we are all making the same thing - a 2/2 twill with the same warp threading. But the variety! We've all chosen different colours of warp, different colours of weft and are looking at completely different treadling sequences. It's fascinating!

Can you tell I'm hooked on another new hobby??

Oh this sounds wonderful, there are quite a few on here that weave.....myself included. before long you'll be turning out all sorts of bags throws scarves etc. Do you spin as well? I ask cos I spin and then weave it up into things, then you have weavings no other person could possibly have.

Was this a table top loom? Sounds brill keep us posted on this..

It sounds like great fun. Since you mentioned treadling, I assume you were working on a floor loom. Do you have space ready for that new loom you are going to get? ;-)

Els has given me a spinning lesson so I have one hank of yarn that I have spun myself. It's probably best described as...ummm....... "novelty yarn" LOL!

Yes, it was a table top loom, on loan from the teacher. It's a Leclerc Dorothy and folds up for transporting. Now I can see why so many people own at least two looms.

I can see so much potential in weaving, especially since I like to make clothes and quilts.

We-ell..........I *did* spend a few hours on the internet the other night, looking at looms. I don't have a huge amount of space and I'd really need to try some out before committing myself. Maybe I need to go to a big conference where I can see a bunch of them.........Don't you think that's a good plan? :-))

Well you've been taught the right way then believe me, that is wonderful....and you keep hold of this first hank, cos before long you'll be trying to make slubs and it'll be harder than you thought...lol.

I have 3 looms...two up in the shed, that I've no room for in the house, a small Harris and a Larger one on loan from my workshop, cos they haven't room for it....then when DS#1 left home I found I then had a work room, and have a very large floor loom up there which dominates the room and shouts at me to warp it up, if it is empty...lol. I really must look at the workshop on tuesday and find somewhere to put this other large tabletop loom back....then I may be able tofind a small space somewhere for my 20inch Table top, as this is so handy for scarves etc.

Have you a way of putting a picture up on the net of your first homespun....I'd find it fascinating to look at..

Anyway well done you......Cheers....Cher

It looks just great, Eimear has the spinning in her finger tips. I have seen much lumpier yarn and that includes my own first spinning.....LOL

Do you have any suggestions for the best kind of project to use someone's first handspun yarn? There's rarely enough for a woven item.

Tamar, may be a small bag, or what I often use my small sample skeins for is the 6x6 exhange. Two 6x6 squares make a nice small bag as well, and here is a chance to make a nice kumihimo braid as well to hold it all together. I find a small bag like that is great for city travel, it will hold keys, tokens for the streetcar, bus and subway, and a small change purse. I would put a closing on the top so that when you sit down and the bag is slightly tilted nothing can fall out. Why I am telling you that is that last week that is exactly what happened to my, my wallet with all my cards in it fell out of my small quilted bag, which by the way has a flap with a heavy bead on it) Lucky for me my wallet got stuck between my brother's car door and the only bad things is that all my cards have a fat bend in them. And no the flap and the bead will not hold things secure. It looks great, but obviously it is not very practical.....LOL.

Tell us what you have done with the skein.

PS if it is white, you can do a little bit of painting on it as well, that is fun also.

I used to have a Harrisville folding loom. Just looked at today's prices

-- about 4-5 times what I paid for mine 30 years ago! Unfortunately, it got hauled off to the dump when my ex-husband had someone clean out the garage where I left it when I moved out and didn't have a way to move it or place to put it in my new home. I went back to get it a couple years later and found out what he'd done. I hope someone salvaged it and was able to put it to good use.

Gosh Els, that was a near miss....even though the cards are flat, at least they didn't fall right out of the car...people can get all sorts of info from a found purse, as well as use your cards and spend your money.

Lovely tips too on the things to make.

Thankyou...~Cher

I don't think I'd want a large one again. I actually went to get it to see about selling it and buying a table loom. The simple rigid heddle looms for children that Harrisville has look like something I may be interested in. I also have a `picture frame' type of loom that I did a small wall hanging with some years ago. But right now, I'm more interested in knitting than weaving.
