Curious about threads exchange...

Hi Nora and others,

What do people typically make with 4-meter lengths of yarn? The exchange sounds quite intriguing, but I have quite a small collection of skeins of yarn compared to what it sounds like with most other people here.

cheers,

David

Keep on in the exchange, and when you get LOTS of bits of yarn, make a wild scarf! ;>) That's what I'm planning on doing. I know Mirjam incorporates a lot of what she gets into her art objects.

Hi Shillelagh,

Thanks for the tip. What kinds of art objects does Mirjam make using these yarn threads? so far I haven't joined in any of the exchanges, I might start with this one.

If only you could SEE them, David... her webpage has much of her work. Basically, moderne tapestry, if you can visualize that in your mind's eye? HTH, Noreen

Hi David,

I know the threads people would welcome you to join the exchange. Just sign up and see what you receive in the mail.

Hugs,

Hi Noreen,

I had twenty years of mostly 20/20 sight, but "tapestry" on its own is a bit vague. On Mirjam's website, does she have text descriptions accompanying her photos, just like on Sarah Carter's page

formatting link
? (Because her page has both images plus text descriptions of same, it's highly accessible to blind people, so I put a note about it on a blind yarn news group I subscribe to.)

Cheers,

David

Okay Nora, I actually took mental stock of various yarn I have, and have more variety than I at first thought, so I'll sign up - I think there's a specific subject line or something I have to do this with, I'll check...

Thanks

David

Hi Mirjam,

Thanks, that would be neat. You can also include a text description in your HTML pictures in this way (it works whether you use .gif or .jpg images):

This text description shows up for text browsers such as Lynx (which I use), and for regular browsers which have images turned off.

If you do this, a brief description can include the main color(s), dimensions (height and width, depth too if the piece is 3-dimensional), materials used (e.g. 6-inch-diameter metal ring, silver /blue variegated macrame cord), whatever. As I mentioned before,

formatting link
has some great examples of simple text descriptions which I enjoyed reading.

Thanks very much! *smile*

Mirjam, Thank YOU for trying to describe what I could not... tapestry and weaving came first to mind.... as it's your work, of COURSE you could describe it much better than I! Hugs, Noreen

Mirjam!

Wow, thank-you so much for giving a description of some of your pieces, it expands my horizons quite a lot about what people can do with crafts. No pun intended.

These descriptions are much too long to put into text on your website in the way I first described. However, if you wanted, I could edit these descriptions and your son could have a link below the image in question "Click here for text description..." going to the text in question.

Cheers,

David

That's okay Mirjam, your pieces sound so wonderfully intricate that it would be a shame to leave out details just to make the text description quite short. In the way of describing the picture as I first described, the size of the block of text has to be able to fit within the size of the picture displayed on the screen... which is why after reading your great descriptions, I realized it would probably be better to have the descriptions put on a different page (perhaps) from the page with the picture.

If your son helped you create your website, he'll know how to do this, it's very simple. :)

Cheers and thanks again for the delightful descriptions!

Wow, more beautiful descriptions, thanks Mirjam!@! Are any of your works currently displayed anywhere near Vancouver, B.C., Canada, I'd love to be able to feel at least one of your pieces. However, I remember from my stamp-collecting days more than 20 years ago that touching is frowned upon because of the oils in the fingers.

Variegated black yarn, is this shades of gray with black? That's an intriguing color!

Thanks again :)
