Interesting fact about Coats & Clark

Hi Everyone,

As you know I was looking for a skein of BonBon Red Heart yarn. Michelle and Gemini each found one and I have one from Michelle. I was curious as to why we didn't have comfort prints here in the US so I just called C&C and asked. The lady I talked to had never heard of it before, but gave me a tollfree number in Canada to call and order. Well, I can't order from there as they deal with Canadian companies only. She asked how I knew about the yarn as I told her I lived in NY and someone in Canada had sent me a skein. She then told me it's made in Turkey for Coats and Clark and sold for and by Walmarts only. So the only way anyone in the US can get it is to go to Canada or have someone send it to us. Yes, the bonbon color is their most popular color and I can see why. Here in the US it was discontinued along with all the other giant skeins of 12oz. Now, they are called 8oz giant skeins.

Hugs,

Nora

Nora, of course, we do not have it here but the interesting thing for me was that it is made in Turkey - seems a very odd country to me to be making yarn to send to Canada. I honestly do not think of Turkey as yarn or textiles etc God Bless gwen

Hi Nora

At least we know why now, even though I'm not sure I like the whole idea. So how did you, in the US, end up with the skein you found if it's only in Canada? Those skeins are now 16oz for solids and 12oz for prints (I'm thinking about doing an afghan in bright orange and pinks for that oldest DD of mine)but judging from the price drop and low stock in the Walmart here, I'm guessing they'll be discontinuing it or downsizing them soon enough.

Did you finish the afghan you were making? I was curious how the blue and pink worked up...

I used to work in the needlework department of a craft store, and let me tell you, Turkey makes a heck of a lot of yarn. Most of the "house brand" yarn we got was made in Turkey. If I remember correctly, most of the Coats and Clark yarns were, too.

Seemed odd to me, too, but it became expected after I had unpacked shipments for about six months. Nearly everything said "Made in Turkey." Got complaints from customers who only wanted to purchase items made in the U.S.

Whose Peacock Feather Shawl is nearly done, apart from the edging. Turning out VERY nice.

Well, here in Stockholm I have to go to a Turkish shop to find thin crochet thread (made in Turkey). Here in Sweden crochet is considered something made mostly by "invandrare" (i.e. immigrants) and the yarn shops runned by Swedes have very little or no interest in crochet. As said, crochet is something made by immigrats from Turkey or Greece. It may sound a bit silly, but that's the truth. Turkey has a long textile tradition, just think about Turkish carpets. Before China-EU agreement, almost all cheap clothes on sell in Europe come from Turkey...

Encore Elite yarn is also make in Turkey.

Anchor #12 Perle cotton is made in Turkey as well.

There are probably lots of other brands made there that I haven't run across, but these are items I've used and have in my stash.

As far as I can tell, they are quality products.

Nyssa, who will buy quality yarn from almost anywhere as long as the price is right

Hi Michelle,

Here is was called a giant skein and I don't know how we got that color. The giant skeins were discontinued last year some time. Yes, I finished the afghan and love the way it worked up, will send a picture when I take it. Now, is the bright orange and pink by any chance bikini color? If so and you need it, I can get you lots of it, or Rusty can as that's her favorite color.

The cost of labour in both Canada and the States is so hight, that the Textile industry is now mainly in the orient....India, China, Pakistan, Iran etc etc. I do not think that there is a lot of yarn manufactured in either country any more. I know that Spin Right in Ontario, get a lot of their yarns from Europe, and form the Eastern countries in Europe at that, where the labour is cheaper. Turkey is one of the countries where lotsof yarns are manufactured. Same goes for clothing and linens for bedding. One by one the welknown brands are made off shore.
