Wow

If you read the Wendy Knits blog you've read about Wendy's love of The Loopy Ewe

Well, I second that emotion. A couple months ago I placed my first order, and it arrived in my mailbox in seemingly record time, just a couple days after placing the order. Well, they just did one better. I placed this last order on Saturday and it arrived today - woohoo!!!

So the stash has increased by 1 skein of Schaefer "Anne" in the Indian Summer colorway, 2 skeins of Shepherd Sock in each of Red Rover and Manzanita (two colorways I haven't seen at the not-so-local yarn shops I frequent), and 1 skein of Lane Borgosesia "Cashwool" - not cashmere but a really nice laceweight wool - in a yummy Bordeaux color and a total steal at $14 for 1460+ yards.

Yee-ha!!!

Kim, I went and had a look. While their yarns are lovely, here's what I learned about one of them: Handmaiden Sea Silk, which is a Canadian yarn and available at my LYS. Loopy Ewe is charging $45. US per hank, and I can get this at my LYS (Ram Wools) for $32.50 Cdn/hank. I bought 2 hanks during their June sale at a

25% discount ($24.38 Cdn). Luckily Ram Wools has a twice yearly sale, so I usually wait for any pricey yarns and buy them there at the sale price. With 7% exchange on the US dollar, this yarn would sell for $30.23 US (approx) and I'm sure, more than cover the shipping charges in comparison to the $45.

The Fleece Artist Sea Wool is priced more realistically. The US price is $24/hank, while the Cdn price is $25/hank which translates to $23.25 US (approx).

However, their pricing on Regia Silk sock yarn beats the Cdn price. US price is $8.95/ball, Cdn is $11.95, which converts to 11.12/ball US. Both for 50gr 200 metre ball.

Just goes to show it helps to shop around. ;>)

Yep. The price on the Shepherd Sock is $2 less than the shop I go to, plus I have to pay sales tax at the shop but not when ordering from out of state, plus they have colors I haven't seen locally. I tend to go with whichever place has what I'm looking for at the best price, and if I can get free shipping it's even better.

For laceweight merino consider Bendigo Woollen MIlls's 2ply Classic Cones. 1180 metres (200g) is AU$10.18. I have it shipped to me in NZ and even with the shipping costs it's still much cheaper than what I can get locally. To get a kilo (almost 6000 metres) of said laceweight (postage included) to the US you're looking at a total bill of US$70. (If you buy less the shipping is less so you don't have to save up for a huge order but there may be some economies in scale - I haven't investigated.)

No affiliation but I've found their service prompt and reliable (thanks Wooly for putting me onto them in the first place and Cheryl for sending me some of her spare sample cards).
