Need yarn advice

Hi everyone,

I'm still here, mostly lurking these days, since life has gotten very busy.

One of my friends who's not online much has a specific project in mind, and I don't know how to direct her, since we live in the same area and frequent the same yarn shops.

She'd like a bright green sport or DK yarn that's not too pale (more medium than baby) and has a 25-100% wool content. She's partial to Plymouth Encore DK, but there is apparently only a darker hunter green shade available in our area in Encore. She also would like it to be more of a purer green, not like the earth tone/sage greens that seem to be so popular right now. For her project, it must have some wool in it, as pure cottons, silks, bamboo, any of the plant yarns don't have the feel she's looking for.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a yarn that might fit the bill?

TIA Leah

I can never remember what weight is what. Dale Baby Ull is fingering but maybe if you help two strands together it would come to the weight she was looking for? I have a nice green (I think it is the one in the top row of the color card on

which is kind of a subdued lime. Looks like there are a couple other options as well. This is great yarn - 100% superwash merino wool. I made my DD a sweater when she was a newborn and it held up great in the wash.HTH!

PS. If your LYS carries the yarn that she wants, ie Encore DK. Ask the owner to see the shop's shade card, since they already has an account with the distributor any color your friend likes could be special ordered. DA

What a clever idea, 2 lighter strands held together! If she can't find a shade in Encore online she likes that may be the solution.

Hi-

I am a pure wool junkie, but I'm really liking the Jamieson Shetland's lately. They come in many different weights, including a DK. They have a very large color selection -- so finding a color shouldn't be a problem. I see many green options.

They also allow yarn shops to order "by the skein" for a small extra charge (so they may up your price a bit). But the yarn is not that expensive to begin with.

The yarn is a bit rough at first, but softens and blooms great with a bit of Euculan or similar product in luke warm water.

You can see the colors here:

usually don't have backorders either. My local store carries a very small selection, so they usually special order for me (breaking bags of 10 as necessary). It usually only takes a few days to arrive. Hope this helps. It's probably the largest color selection of a DK wool that I know of.

Hi Joseph

Thanks, I'll pass that name along! I like and mentioned Brown Sheep's wool yarns, but my friend thinks Naturespun may felt if she's not extremely careful washing it, and it's for a scarf she wants to not be too warm, as our winters are rather mild, and she's not too sure if Lamb's Pride would be thin enough for the pattern she's got in mind, which is apparently kind of a wide repeat.

I'll check it out for me as well, since I have a couple of old patterns I'm looking to make up in wool, and I'm just starting to think about color selection.

Thanks again!

Hi Leah-

If you buy their 2-ply "Jumper Weight", I've had NO trouble getting to to match the exactly to the needed stitches to inch on the Knit-O-Graph or Knit-To-Fit patterns -- nor on the ladies dresses from the 40's and fifties that are also Knit-To-Fit.

Of course whether or not it looks good in a dress depends on the color and intended wear, but I have done it and loved it.
