Knitting Camp Report

On Monday, June 13, I flew from Winnipeg to Minneapolis to Denver, then a

1.5 hr shuttle bus from Denver airport to Fort Collins, CO. I roomed with my former secret pal Mary Pat, in a very nice 2 bedroom suite at the Marriott Residence Inn. Nice thing about this hotel is a hot buffet breakfast included in the nightly rate as well as an evening get together with snacks and drinks.

On Tuesday the 14th we drove to Boulder for a fun day. We toured the Celestial Seasonings plant (Tea) and I dropped a few bucks in the gift shop. Two Christmas gifts were purchased (heh, heh). She took me over to a yarn shop in Boulder called Shuttles, Spindles & Skeins. What a great shop! We spent a few hours and dollars there. I picked up some fab sock yarn called Sockotta by Plymouth Yarn. 45% Cotton, 40%Superwash Wool, 15% Nylon. I also bought some stitch markers and a set of bamboo sock needles. We had a quick deli lunch and headed over to the Pearl Street Mall. What a great way to rejuvenate a downtown street. There were flower planters everywhere and the mall was pretty busy for a Tuesday afternoon. We had planned to have dinner at the Cheesecake Factory, but finished up early at the mall and were too full to eat. We ended up having snacks and wine back at the hotel.

Wednesday morning and afternoon was spent at yarn stores in Fort Collins and that was fun! We found a brand new store called "My Sister Knits" in a residential area. It was on the second floor of a carriage house behind the main house. We drove right by it the first time! I can heartily recommend this store if you're ever in Fort Collins. It may be small, but it's crammed with all kinds of yummy yarns. Tons of Brown Sheep yarn! I found some yarn there that I couldn't resist: 2 skeins of Fortissima Colori Socka Color sock yarn in the coolest shades of blue/brown/cream/grey and a sparkling silver lurex thread through it - and on sale too! I just hope the silver thread doesn't itch. I bought 2 skeins of the dreamiest Kid Merino l ace weight by Crystal Palace in mauve/purple/green variegated. Gorgeous! Then, 2 skeins of some crazy fun yarn called Fling by Crystal Palace in black with a green lurex thread. These will probably become a wild scarf. We enjoyed the friendly atmosphere so much we brought a bunch of the knitting camp women back there the next day. After we finished there we drove down the road a few miles to the Lambspun store. Another fabulous yarn store. There, Mary Pat picked up copies of the new knitting mystery called "Knit One, Kill Two" that had been signed by the author and promptly gave one to me (smile)! The author of this mystery used the Lambspun store as her model for the shop in the book. There is a restaurant attached to the store, so we met a couple of other women there for lunch and libations.

Wednesday evening was the first get together of the knitting group for camp. It was fun renewing acquaintances and discussing projects.

Thursday and Friday were spent knitting, having show & tell of everyone's completed projects, as well as some help & instruction on a sweater being done as a group project by some.. My lace weight mauve neverending shawl drew a lot of nice comments (grin).

On Saturday, one of the women drove some of us up to the Estes Park Wool & Fiber Festival. What beautiful scenery! I had a ball up there, and spent quite a bit of time looking at the llamas and alpacas. But of course, the ultimate was the Wool Barn filled with exhibitors and their fabulous yarns. There was a company from Texas that had the most gorgeous mohair yarn in wonderful color combinations. I managed to restrain myself! I did pick up some beautiful superwash merino wool in a wonderful combo of purple/green/turquoise/blue from Interlacement yarns in Colorado Springs. I bought 2 x 8oz skeins for $10 each and I think they are worsted weight.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday we all went out for dinner as a group and fun was had by all.

I had to get up really early Sunday for the "fun" shuttle bus ride back to the Denver airport and then home by around 1 pm. I had a great time and it was wonderful to see Mary Pat again.

Shelagh, I am so envious! You must have really enjoyed yourself. I loved the yarn pictures, but I noticed that there were no pictures of you there. One of these days, I have to do that. Thanks for the report AND the pictures. Katherine

Heh - the reason for the lack of pics of me is one common to overweight women - I hate how I look these days, so will not appear in pics. I always look at myself and think " Is that really me?" Ick.

LOL!! I took golf lessons one year where they videotape your swing and then play it back (next to another tape of someone actually doing it right). I know I should have been concentrating on my form, but the first thing that popped into my head when I saw it was "OMG, do my legs really look that heavy??" I haven't worn anything but long pants to golf in since then.

The camp sounds like a great time! Thanks for the pictures and the report!

Shelagh , Anna Maria, Gemini and all ... It is high time we all understood there are No ugly woman ,!! And it is high time we educate ourselves and Our kids and ALL ,,,, that having lived life , left marks on us ,.,,,, and we should wear those with Pride ,,, There is something wrong with adoring only those without experience without any stories to tell ... The folds in our skin , tell of having kids , and carrying them and educatimg them , it Says we worked and washed and created , and Had a life , and gave to life. Weplanted trees for others to enjoy and eat the fruits , The least we could expect is not to be looked down at because we aren`t Miss macaroni sixed anymore ,, So what ???? For all i see now adays ,,The beauty queens of my youth , are shy about looking Different, thus they are bitter, and unhappy ,,, but beauty has other sides than macaroni sizes Body + tight skin , Beauty shines the inside of your deeds, of your relations and creations, of the jokes you told and heard , the laughs you laughed and the tears you shed ,,, The beauty is that you Survived and manged to get to this age ,,, I have designed and made , severl years ago a set of Medals for women ,,, It is ridiculous that General get stripes and medals for war activities and woman who keep the world going with Washing , cooking , ironing etc ,,,, don`t get any medals for this !!!!! Only yesterday another artist asked to photograph me , soi she could use my face +natural hair ,,,, My face isn`t an empty Book , it has chapters of wrinklles that tell stories ,,, My body collected signs of life as well ,,,, why not ??? Be proud of your life and of the Signs of life you have !!!! mirjam

Yes it Is YOU + life ,,,,,, mirjam

Thank you for your words of wisdom, Mirjam. I am keeping your words to look back and reflect on. :o)

I have to tell you though... although I don't think of myself as a beauty (never have, even when I was younger), I also never thought of myself as ugly. I know that I have and have always had inner beauty (God, that sounds conceited... but not meant to be) because I always smile and try to be friendly toward others, even when I'm not feeling so great myself at times. I know that I make others feel good about themselves, and I tend to bring about a smile from people even when they look unapproachable. I always tend to be the person that people tell their problems to... when I had a chat channel for a while, I had young teens coming and talking to me about things on their minds all the time. I used to joke with a couple of close friends that if I got paid half of what a psychiatrist made for listening to these kids, I'd be filthy rich. LOL

I have been told in the past that I have a kind face, by a bus driver that I only ever saw one time. A male friend (I used to have a group of male friends that I hung around with... I tended to get along better with them than with females that I knew in that time of my life... I was "one of the guys") once said to another male friend... like I wasn't even there to hear it... that my smile lit up the entire room and made the person being smiled at feel like they were the most important person there. That one really made me blush, because that sounds like something that should have been said about someone they were interested in romantically, not as just a friend. And a good female friend from when I was 20 said the Neilsen song "Can't Live, If Living Is Without You" reminded her of me.... the part about "You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows!"... she thinks I have sad eyes, but I smile anyway. *shrug* Today (it was sweltering hot and humid and everyone was kind of b*tchy because of it) when I was getting gas in my van, I spoke with an older man who really looked unapproachable as we walked toward the building to pay... by the time we finished paying and were heading back to our vehicles he wished me a wonderful day and I replied... "The same to you. It's too beautiful a day not to enjoy it." He smiled very wide, got into his car and drove away smiling... which made me smile too. :o)

So while I am unhappy with my extra weight (and I hope to be able to lose some of it this year), I'm not really unhappy with the rest of the way I look. I have just always been a bit camera shy and never really cared for having my picture taken... which is likely why I dropped out of modeling school when I was 18... camera shy, and not comfortable in front of crowds. I do *occasionally* have my picture taken, but I'm usually not too thrilled about it, or the results. Someday I will get my picture (the one that I

*do* like) put up on a website... I *used* to have a website and my picture was on there, but the server that held it changed hands and then somewhere along the way the website was lost. :o/

Once again, Mirjam, thank you for the very nice words of wisdom about why people look the way they do as they grow older. *hugs*
