Trip to Berlin in June

Hi Guys, Well, its finally official and I am going to Berlin with DH this June. He is going for the ASME/IGTA Conference so ALL of his expenses will be covered by the company. He's just finished making my plane reservations and OY that was expensive enough. Thank heavens the cost of the hotel and food is covered by the company! I know we have several members who live in Germany but I'm not sure any of you live anywhere near Berlin. Of course, there are likely to be several of you have have been to Berlin and know enough to be able to recommend any LQS & LNS that might be worth the effort of getting there! There will be a number of excursions offered for the spouses of the attending engineers but after paying for the air fare, I'm not sure how much sight seeing we'll be able to afford -- LOLOL. I certainly won't be taking organized tours every day even if we could afford it so I will be needing a legitimate excuse to be out and about on my own -- beside self directed sightseeing :-). I managed to make my way around using public transpo or shank's mare when we were in Amsterdam and Vienna and even the hinterlands of the Czech Republic! I'm sure I can manage in Berlin. I'll just do what I always do when stumbling around in non-English speaking countries -- make sure I have a business card from the hotel if I get lost and need to take a taxi back. So -- any and all recommendations for LQS or LNS are gratefully accepted. And if any of you actually live in Berlin, I would be thrilled for the opportunity for a "Meet & Greet". I would even be more than happy to bring a bit of stateside stash for anyone interested :-))). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I live at the other end of Germany, down south in Munich, don't know any Berlin shops, but looked up ads in German mags (the stores seem to open at

The Karstadt department store also might have some fabric. Warning: most patchwork fabric is imported from the US and costs 2-3 times as much. There are a few German fabrics, look for Westphalenstoffer (very nice woven checks and stripes), or maybe a store specializing in fabric for folk costumes if you can find one. And don't neglect curtain fabric stores. Mostly icky synthetics, but sometimes you can find treasure.

There's an American Women's Club in Berlin

who knows, they might have some activity you could attend as a guest, or be able to hook you up with local quilters.Roberta in D

I've been to a lot of those conferences; none outside the US. It is surely intimidating to join the spouse excursions when you don't know anybody at all - but you can do it and you will enjoy it. TiaMary, you can buy fabric anytime; turn loose, climb in and join the other spouses on at least some of the plans. They will take good care of you and you will come home with some memories to cherish. I'm sure. Polly
