Another OT: request

Hi, I'm back again, this time with a request. In my position with OES this year, I have a project that I try to raise money for. I've picked Autism, and now can't find any of the ribbon that they use. So if any of you are near a Wal-Mart store, do you think you could go and look in the crafts section at the fabric ribbon for me? The ribbon is the one that looks like jigsaw puzzle pieces. I would love to find some and would be willing to send the funds to cover buying a few rolls of it + the postage to mail it to me. Thanks Gang.

Norma, I Googled Ribbon for Autism and came up with a few sites that sell the ribbon - one was RibbonShop.com - they had an ad on the right side of the screen.

Hope this helps,

Rusty in CT

Hi Norma! If I make it into the city early enough tonight, I'll have a look in WalMart for you. If not, I have an appointment with my lawyer on Monday, so I'll check then. :o)

Peace! Gemini

Hi Rusty, thanks for looking for me. I did go to that site, but unfortunately, they don't do online orders outside of the U.S.

I did find a local Autism site with an email addy and I've emailed them asking for help. I'll let you know if this works.

how much do you need? my local JoAnne's has some in stock, at least 3 rolls last time i was in. and not to be a pain, but a lot of autistic people really don't like the puzzle ribbon. i think it's because it's promoted by the Defeat Autism Now groups, which treat autism like some dread disease that needs to be stamped out at all costs (& are looking for genetic markers so parents can choose not to have autistic children). they also push 'cures' of dubious nature, some of which can be very harmful to autistic children (chelation 'therapy', ABA if not done very carefully, weird diets, etc.) as an autistic adult with a kid on the spectrum, i personally don't have a problem with the ribbon, just with the DAN groups that use it for fundraising. i find them very hateful toward autistic children & very dismissive & demeaning to autistic adults. autism is treatable, but we don't *want* to be "cured", we want to be accepted as the unique individuals we are. oops... got a bit stuck on the soapbox. sorry :) lee

Hi Lee, I hope that you didn't feel that I was being dismissive or demeaning. I have two great-nephews with autism, and want to try to help bring this to the forefront. Too many people don't understand and need education. As you said, there is no cure. The ribbon is one way to make people think, in my opinion. There is a lot of information out there, but I know from personal experience that many people don't know that it isn't a disease, and I'm hoping that my little bit of work might help in some small way.

I have found the address of the Autism Society in my province and have sent an email to them. If I don't hear from them in a few days, I may take you up on your offer to get some for me. I'll get back to you, ok? and thanks. :-)

Thanks Cher, I think it's important to bring this to people, so they can start to understand. There is a lot of information., as I'm sure you are aware, but not a lot of it gets out. I'm hoping to help a bit, anyway.

As part of the UK lot I would like to say THANKYOU Norma, and to everyone who cares for anyone with a disability thankyou too, cos without you our special needs people would be still back in the dark ages and locked up as being mad and unsocial... Cheers Cher

yes, educating is really a big help to both the people on the spectrum *and* thier parents. also, *every* parent or parent-to- be should be made aware of the really early developmental signs of autism and sensory integration disorder, because early intervention helps amazingly, the earlier the better. :)

ok. glad i can help. lee
