Liz great that you liked them. The Mohair one took a long time and lots of pulling out.....LOL but I now can dream that pattern, it must be like learning a new language.....LOL

Els, did you use one of the designs from Modular Knits for your squares? If so, which one? My library ordered the book not long after I requested it. I've checked it out and started to read it

The mohair one looks like a modular knit - I have all the lessons but have only got as far as lesson four and a multidirectional scarf! It is a great idea for a square, though, and well worth the effort!

Hello Jan, sorry I was going to let you know how I made out with it.

Indeed I did use the Modular Knits book by Iris schreier. I started out with the basket weave, and used the instructions on page 20, "Shapes to learn". My problem was with the short rows that knitted so quickly up, I would sort of get carried away and forget to slip the first stitch, after I had turned. I also found it confusing that she really knits two rows but calls it one row. I started out, with the yarn I had spun up for Liz. However it was mohair and it is not very happy being pulled out all the time. I took some cotton and knitted and took apart and knitted until I had it right and also started to understand what I was doing. I may not be swift, but my stuborness will get me there in the end.....LOL. Once I had the hang of it I used the handspun yarn. I do liked the end result, but Jan, let me know what you think, once your start making some samples. Do you think that it is easier to pick the stiches up on the side and then knit them, to get the same effect?

Liz and Jan, that is what I have been doing with many of my squares. Make little samples of knitting techniques I had never done before and thus learn something at the same time. I am sorry now that I did not keep track of all the squares I knitted and take picktures of them all, but never mind, I can always sit and knit them all for myself right......LOL if only my memorly would oblige....LOL

Thanks much for the explanation, Els. It's good to know about how she counts rows as I can see it would be confusing. So far I've just done a quick page through the book looking for something I really like and found it when I got to the Diamond Panel Vest on page 109. Of course, it would have to be near the end and not a good place to start using her innovative technique. I don't know that I'll get much of anything done before returning the book to the library but I'll let you know if I do.

Jan you can always let me know if there is something in the book you would like to knit, I can help you out at that point. E-mail me if, and when you get that far.
