OT: Porcelain Houses

Hi all. Some years ago I started collecting small porcelain houses (Lemax) and every Christmas I assemble them like a little village. It takes a lot of work and a "bit" of space but the result (along with the 2.80cm Christmas Tree) is so beautiful that we don't mind. Each little house has it's own small light bulb .Last year I had a problem with two of the light bulbs and can't find replacement for them anywhere. We searched in all the DIY stores we could find but,..nothing. They have small sizes, low voltages but the wrong ones and the transformers won't take it. Can someone tell me please (I'm in Brussels) if there is some place around here where I could find a variety of low voltage light bulbs?? I know it is a bit stretchy to ask for this in here but, who knows, I might get lucky :-). Thank you in advance.

I have never been to Brussels, Sofia, so I couldn't begin to help you find what you are looking for. However, reading about your Christmas Porcelain Scene sounds lovely. If you take pictures of it all set up, I would love to see a couple of the pictures. :o)

I have one small village and want to add to it, but haven't gotten around to doing it yet... one of these days I will... I am always seeing really pretty porcelain houses, shops, churches, etc in the stores at Christmas, and look forward to the time when I can buy a couple to add to our own Christmas scene.

I don't know if there's a Radio Shack equivalent in Belgium, but their website should help you get manufacturer part numbers for the bulbs or LEDs you need.

Hi Gem,they really are pretty. The best ones I saw were those from Lemax, they are so perfect, so full of details. I only have (yet :-)7 houses, lots of trees, horse and carriage, street lamps, many people doing different things, park benches and lots, lots of snow. The problem is I can't find them easily and they are quite expensive but I'm sure my collection will grow. They have a great site, you only have to look for Lemax, a thing I can't do :-( All their collection is there. I have one or two pictures, if I find them I'll scan and send them to you. I'll have to ask ,very nicely, my PC to open the programme. Most of the times he doesn't feel like to. If you decide to add to your village you'll never want to stop finding more and more pieces to make the scene more real. It's lots of fun and it will give you an excuse to play with "dolls" again :-). But you'll have (probably) the same problem I do, after, when the time comes to put everything away. I keep each one of them in it's original box and all the accessories. Boy, what a load of work and lack of space. There is snow everywhere on the carpet, the sofas, ..................... My rheumatism hates the surplus of work .But they are so pretty, aren't they??? I'm a very forgiving person :-) I hope you are too. Have fun. Sofia D (from Brussels with love :-)

Thank you for your information but I can't go on the net. I have a psychologically challenged PC :-)

Oh yes, I am a forgiving person when it comes to mess. Speaking of snow on the carpet, sofa, etc reminded me of when Matthew was very small. He was very VERY quiet in the livingroom alone.... definitely NOT a good sign. I looked in and there he was with the open baby powder shaking it up into the air with it going absolutely everywhere. He saw me in the doorway and said "SNOW MOMMIE, SNOW!" How can you stay mad at that? LOL

I went to the Lemax website bc I had never heard of the houses before. They are just beautiful. The idea of the different villages seems very similar to Dept. 56 with the Dickens Village and the North Pole, etc., but I think the Lemax buildings have more detail.

I used to have a collection of the Dept 56 ones until it got too big for my apartment two years ago, and I divided them up between my four children. Now I can enjoy them at their homes at Christmas.

You said you can't get to the Internet, but if you ever find a way, there are over 1,000 Lemax items for sale on Ebay.

Enjoy your village !

Will you be my mommy? I did the same thing when I was four, and my mother STILL harps about the mess thirty years later.

ROTFL Seriously? She still gets after you for it? I mumbled and grumbled while trying to get it cleaned up... baby powder is hard to get up, even after about three wipes there is still a trace there. However, I did have to laugh... just not in front of him, because I didn't want him to do it again!

Hey... he also drew a rainbow on the hardwood floor with crayons once... about a year after the "snow" incident. That also hit me funny... but once again not in front of him. I introduced him to a cloth and soapy water... which by the way he thoroughly enjoyed doing... he thought it was fun. LOL

Gem told me:

Yep. STILL goes mental when anyone even mentions baby powder. Of course, she hyperventilates when my little artistic period is brought up, too. The "artwork" in question was (how to delicately put this one?).......in a "self-made" media. I was two. I was in trouble, so I was in my crib. I had a full diaper and didn't like it, and I was in a mood to create something. The two situations sort of resolved themselves, and I had a lovely impressionistic painting on the wall in a single shade of brown. Mom was sooooooooo not amused.

I think she was more angry about the baby powder, though. She says she was showing the house to a prospective buyer and was so embarrassed because she kept finding baby powder in the oddest places. Never did clean it all up, she says.

I just wanted the snow in every nook and cranny of my room. I like snow.

Who really needs to finish quilting her mother's tulip quilt.....maybe that will make her forgive me for the baby powder and "artwork" incidents.

So does my aunt! And it was Mary Ann who did it, not me!

Oh lovely!!! That kind of "artwork" I could happily live without.... and thankfully I did. Matthew never dove into his diapers looking for things to make art with. LOL

No, there is no Radio shack anymore in Belgium. But there are some stores specialised in electronic parts. Maybe they can help you, Sofia. And did you try the toy shops that sell accesoires for miniature trains?

Or else I think you could order the bulbs from Lemax directly.

Hi Ria, we've tried all the shops we could think of except the ones that sell miniature trains and such. That idea I had yesterday when we passed by one in Jette (Rue Leon Théodore- Mirroir) but of course it was closed and we'll have to go there another day. About ordering from Lemax, I can't even go there,or anywhere else on the Net for that matter. But thank you anyway and we'll try the miniatures shop some other day, before Christmas preferably :-)
