dumb yardage question

Hi everybody

I think i kind of already know the answer to this question, but I was wondering...suppose you have a sweater pattern that requires 1400 yards of worsted weight yarn. Now suppose you would like to knit the same sweater using a chunky weight yarn that's say 3 stitches to the inch.

Would you use more or less yarn of the chunky yarn, and how do you determine how much more or less?

I recently got a good deal on some chunky weight yarn that I would like to knit a cardigan out of, but there were only ten balls available of the color I chose. There is 120 yards per ball, so that gives me approximately 1200 yards of yarn. THink I can swing it? It might be possible, I think... I would like to make a cardigan with about a 40" bust.

I am curious about the answer to that question as well. Thicker yarn more yardage needed or is it the other way around....??

Less yardage, more weight. I don't know by what percentage, though.

Hey thanks Wooly! I knew there was a site out there like this, but I'd forgotten where I found it.

That chart was really helpful that Wooly linked to. I guess it makes sense though...not only do you need fewer stitches to achieve horizontal width, but it also takes fewer stitches to make vertical length (which I always forget about!). I found a nice nylon/wool blend, so the weight shouldn't be too bad, I don't think. Still, it would be interesting to me to know what the ratio is...

I may not know where that nifty sock formula got to, but here I can help.

I got this online years ago, and can't find it anymore....but I did create a file for my Palm. :-) No idea if chest is actual measurement or finished garment measurement. Not that it really matters for a guide.

Gauge Yarn Chest Chest Chest Chest (st/4") Weight 46-48" 42-44" 38-40" 34-36"

30-32 Baby 2800m 2600m 2400m 2200m 27-29 Finger 2600m 2400m 2200m 1800m 24-26 Sport 2400m 2200m 1800m 1600m 21-23 DK 2200m 1800m 1600m 1500m 19-20 Worsted 1800m 1600m 1500m 1300m 17-18 Aran 1600m 1500m 1300m 1200m 15-16 Chunky 1500m 1300m 1200m 1100m 12-14 Bulky 1300m 1200m 1100m 1000m 10-11 Polar 100m 900m 800m 700m

1400m in worsted weight would put in around 38", and 3st/inch would be Bulky (by my chart), and 1100m would be the estimate. Your 1200 m sounds more than adequate.
