Gone for the day

I have an appointment (again) with Ontario Works ... it's a three month check to see if anything has changed with my health (can they read the word

*permanant* that my doctor wrote on the forms?) or with my application for Disability (even though I have to photocopy and pass in every piece of paper to them about what's going on). *shrug* I think it's a waste of time and tax payers money to have these meetings, and print out a load of stuff for me to take home every three months.

Matthew and I did have a meeting with my lawyer who is looking after my case in the appeal, and she basically filled us in on the types of questions we will be asked by her/her associate at the appeal. The appeal board had changed the date from July 26th to August 23rd, and since my lawyer had alread scheduled her vacation for that week (because the appeal board isn't usually in the area at that time) she tried to get them to re-schedule my appeal hearing for September. Unfortunately they are booked solid and the next available time slot would be NEXT summer.... no thank you!... so she just left it at August 23rd and her higher-up will take over my case. We meet with him on August 16th to get to know each other and also for him to fill us in on the types of things the appeal board will be asking and how the meeting will likely go. One of us will be in the room with them alone first... then the other will be brought in... but if they allow the first one to stay, the first one cannot talk while the second one is being asked questions.

In any case (getting back to today), I am heading out in about an hour for the meeting with Ontario Works, so I have to get off here and get ready. After the meeting Matthew will be going to a couple of places on the opposite side of the city to bring in his resume and apply for work.. so we will be gone most of the day.

One place Matthew is applying to is Future Shop (for those who don't know... this is a store that sells computers, printers, and all the things that go with them; as well as appliances too), and the other is another Call Centre.

Since Matthew just came from working at a rival Call Centre (and was fired for helping other reps as well as un-trained supervisors), the Call Centre may grab him fast to work for them. He's not sure how long it will last if they do hire him though... there were a LOT of people who came to StarTek where he used to work from this other place, and they have said that it is crazy over there and they are very picky about a lot of things and people get fired easily, or just get so stressed that they end up quitting. So part of us wants him to get a job soon, but other parts of us don't want it to be somewhere where it could only last a short length of time.

Guess we'll just have to wait and see!

Hi Gem,

Prayers going out for both you and Matthew today and you should have a great hearing on Aug.23th as that's a day for me to remember, my Dad's birthday and my great nephew's birthday. My Dad would have been 85 and the little guy is turning six.

Hugs,

Nora

I hear you, Gem! Keith has been disabled for nearly 20 years, and still has to go through this several times a year. And if he is not prompt about it, he can lose benefits. I think that the purpose of bureaucrats is to justify their jobs!

Good luck to Matthew. (You don't need it, as your point is obvious!)

Thank you, Nora. My meeting wasn't too bad today... and once again it was deferred for three more months, but she said "By that point you *should* have heard something back from Disability whether or not they are going to approve you this time. And if they don't, don't worry, you can re-apply for it again, only next time you'll also have the specialists report to add to it so it should help a great deal."

*fingers crossed* for August 23rd though, as I really don't want to have to go through the money worries for another whole year.

That's very true, Katherine. If they don't have meetings (necessary or not) and send out papers to let you know that you are late with something therefore you have been cut off (instead of sending you a warning letter, or call that you *could* be cut off)... then basically they look like they are being paid for doing nothing. :o/

Thank you! Matthew went to Future Shop and was given a paper to take home with a URL on it for online applications... when/if the person is called, then they will accept his resume.

He went to the other Call Centre this afternoon too, but was too late to take any tests today. So the lady took his resume and said that someone would likely call him in the morning to set up a time for him to come in and take the tests. The tests consist of math (with a calculator), online work, typing skills, and computer programs.... he has done all of these things at the last Call Centre he worked at, so there should be no problem. The lady told him that within a couple of weeks they are starting a training session, so they want to get as many applicants in as possible by the time that starts. I have a feeling that this will be the one he has the best response for. Although because of how many people we know who used to work there... and their reasons for NOT working there anymore... Matthew is a little apprehensive about it, thinking it may only last a few weeks. But... any little thing is better than nothing right now, and that's the way he's looking at it.

Hi Gem,

Same thing here in the US if you are on disability. Tom has been disabled for ten years and every year the insurance company sends a letter for the doctor to fill out. The doctor states the same thing, he is not going to be able to work again, he is permanently disabled. Also with Social Security every five years he has to pass a complete physical and see their doctor just to keep his benefits.

That is really dorky! If the doctor says "permanant" then that should be enough! :o/
