Help with pattern

I am a beginner knitter and I need help . I would like to make a pair of the Phentex slippers but I am having problems . This is the pattern I am making this is not the checker pattern . It is the stripe pattern It seems simple until I start to knit row # 2

a.. Cast on 66 stitches with light colour. Knit first 6 stitches in light colour, then 6 stitches in dark colour. Alternate the colors every 6th stitch. b.. All rows are knit (garter stitch), being careful to twist the light color over the dark one. c.. I cast on no problem. I knit first 6 stitches no problem then the next

6 in the new color still no problem I carry each color along to the last stitch no problem . d.. I have trouble when I turn my work and need to knit again . The stranding of the 2 colors is now on both sides . I have several pairs of phentex slippers made by others and the strand of 2 colors is only on the inside Does anyone know what I am doing wrong and can they explain Thanks

Are you carrying the unused color on the back side of each row? On the right side rows the colors will be carried at the back, on the wrong side rows on the front of the knitted fabric DA

Just be careful where you carry the wool. Even though you are knitting all the time, carry the wool along behind EVERY row.

OK, assuming that row two is wrong side, insert the right hand needle into the first stitch, knit as normal, bring the yarn back between the needles and catch the contrasting yarn, take the working yarn to the back of the knitting to knit the second stitch. DA

You just bring the yarn to the knit position. And keep the strands on the same side of the yarn - the side away from you.

Fran,

Also when you carry the yarn over the other stitches, make sure to hold it lose so it doesn't pull.
