I'm still working on my lace weight shawl and soon I will have to start the second ball. Working with this weight is new to me so I want to join the strongest, least noticeable way and not at the end of a row. The instructions say use the "spit-splice" method. I was wondering about using a Russian Join instead.
Does anyone have any recommendations which way would work best?
Just did the same thing myself. Granted, my yarn was thick enough to do this with, but I'm not sure if fine laceweight would work like this. I used the join where you thread a needle with the ball that's ending. Work the needle back through the same strand a few inches down, and go through around two inches or so before taking the needle off. Pull the end through until you've got a small loop left on the strand. Then take the new ball, thread its end through the loop you made on the old strand and repeat the needle bit, drawing this new strand back in through itself. Pull both ends to close each loop, snip the ends where they come out of the strand, and voila! It may be a teeny bit bulky at those spots if you're doing a fine lace, but it worked. Don't know if that's the official Russian Join or not. Just know that's what the book said to do.
Hi, Betty! For me, personally, the Russian join is too 'visible' with laceweight, especially when actually knitting LACE, grin. I've used the spit splice method, and basically 'felt' those spliced ends together, and it's held strongly and virtually invisibly for me. DO let us know what you end up doing.... JM2C, Noreen
I think I will try the Russian join when I'm working with a heavier yarn, but for the lace weight, I want to try the spit-splice method. Only I'm really hoping water will work just as well.......:P
