knitting on double pointed needles

Just a quick question - I never knitted on double pointed needles.Do you just kast on the stitches evenly around and knit round and round????

I usually cast onto one needle then redistribute the stitches, join, and start knitting. I like to split the stitches evenly between the needles. Sometimes there is a repeating pattern that may make sense using a different distribution to help remember the pattern changes easier.
