Knitting question

DD is learning to knit and is on her very first scarf. We discussed having her make a scarf for her BF. She is okay with the idea, but we wanted something very masculine. I suggested a 1-1 rib. How much would that roll or does she need to do a border? We got a Chunky Wool-Ease in a charcoal gray. Any really simple non garter stitch pattern will be fine if someone has a better suggestion. I don't mind garter stitch for the border, but it is too boring for her for right now. And it always is too boring for me. LOL.

TIA, Susan

What about moss stitch? Or a basket stitch with a garter border?

Thanks to both of you - now she has some ideas. She is so new to this - without me being there to do a lot of side by side assistance, she is not sure of herself - but with a little extra time, I know she will do just fine.

A rib stitch -- 1x1, 2x2, 3x3, etc. won't roll at all, so she won't need a border! The only trick will be to do a test swatch to see how wide it will be, since ribs tend to scrunch up, and the scarf may not seem wide enough. As to what rib to use, I would go for 2x2 or 3x3, which will certainly work up faster due to less throwing of the yarn between ribs.

This is what I would suggest also. I'm making a scarf for my BF using plush yarn, size 10 needles and 2-2 rib. It's working out well. The test swatch is a good idea also so you can get enough stitches to make it wide enough.

I'm only jumping in here 'late' to agree first that ribbing won't roll, and that a border isn't necessary... and secondly, a suggestion... esp. if the maker 'dislikes' purling.... how about Brioche rib??? EZ, knit all the way, and IT won't 'roll' either.... JM2C, Noreen

This is the one she is working on - or was when I left her. She is using 18 stitches on 15 needles. It is just the right width. I left her a graph so she can count her rows. The way she is doing it is a 14 row pattern where she k1p1's 6 rows, purls one. Then rib another 6 and knit one. That way the rows with humps all are on the same side. It is really pretty and she likes it. That was the hard part...teaching her something that she could do away from my help and be something she would work on.

Thanks for all the ideas.
