knitting vs. crocheting

That's not cheating, that's just using a knitting rake or peg frame. You can make other things; you just have to learn to move a loop over to knit 2 together, and there you are shaping the form into something that isn't just a rectangle. If you go back and forth over just the middle part for a while, then go along the whole row again, you make a little short-row bulge in the work that can be a sock heel; once it's done, just sew the twp sides together (the seam will be up the front if you make the bulge in the middle, or on the bottom of the foot if you do one half bulge on each side). Experiment! Anything that can be made on two needles can be made on a knitting rake.
