Lazy about felting

Is there a basic "rule of thumb" of shrinkage when felting? It is wasteful for me to do a swatch & felt it as I have to have my DH hook up my "felting washer" and unhook the "front loader". Consequently, I don't swatch felting as the trouble I have to go through to felt at all.

Any help, sites, suggestions?

Unless 1. you already know how that yarn knitted at that gauge will behave when fulled or 2. you're willing to take your chances, you'll have to swatch and full your swatch. Every type of yarn behaves differently - even different dyelots of the same color will behave differently from each other.

The good news is that you can felt a swatch without having to use the special washer. Just sew the swatch into a pillowcase and wash it as usual. Then unstitch where you sewed the pillowcase shut to retrieve the swatch.
