Looking for a pattern

Hi everybody, I'm new around here.

I do a lot of work outside during the winter (brrrrrr), and I have been wanting to knit my own pair of long john pants to wear under my work pants. (I am thinking about alpaca as a fiber). But I haven't had any luck finding a pattern.

Does anyone know of something that would work? As long as it was fairly close fitting with narrow legs, that should be ok.

Thanks in advance. I am really enjoying reading the posts.

Maybe you could adapt a stockings pattern.

've got heaps of vintage knitting patterns but I don't think I've seenone for long johns. Plenty of vests and "knickers" but no long johnsI'm afraid.

There are patterns for long johns in several issues of the reprints of Weldon's Practical Needleworks available from Interweave Press. Welcome, DA

i'd rethink the alpaca unless it's blended with wool. alpaca has no memory, so your knees & bottom would stretch out & never 'bounce back'. however, i think a blend would be very nice as far as extra warmth... maybe get some silk in there too...

have you looked in any of the Weldon's Practical Needlework reprints? or maybe a tights pattern? lee

Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitter's Almanac has in it a generic formula for knitted longies. Custom-fitted, no less.

Alpaca is a lovely yarn, but very expensive, and not as sturdy as you would probably want for your use. I suggest a blend -- lots of wool, plus a bit of alpaca or something else to make it nice and soft. My main suggestion, however, is to purchase silk longjohns! They are thin, light, very warm, comfortable, and easy to wash/dry in your laundry. You can get several pairs of very nice silk longjohns for the price of the yarn you would need to knit a pair!
