Recommendation - fingerless gloves for stitching?

I think topic has been discussed before, but I wanted to know if there's anything new out there that I should look at. Here in cold Alberta, my skinny wrists are constantly FREEZING. So, I'd like some fingerless gloves to use while stitching (and typing at work, actually). Do y'all have any recommendations? If possible, I'd like minimal seaming in the wrists, as seams irritate my carpal tunnel syndrome.

Thanks!

What about something like the gloves that weightlifters wear? I don't think they have fingers, and I know they come up a little higher on wrist. The other thing you might try is getting a pair of the close- fitting mini-gloves and cutting the fingers off, then stitching the edges of the holes to prevent unravelling. This is a trick from my marching band days. I remember my grandmother showing me a knitting pattern that she used to use during the war to make fingerless gloves for her brothers-in- law who were serving overseas. If you knit, or know someone who does, they might have such a pattern, or be able to modify one to make what you need. Hope that helps!

The fingerless gloves I've seen have all ended close to the base of the hand.

I think you'd do better to grab the knitting needles and knit yourself a pair of wristlets.

Are the Handeze gloves warm enough? They have one now that has a wrist insert you warm in the microwave:

they're seamed, but I wear mine inside-out to avoid seamlines!) Piecework has also recently had free patterns for wrist warmers - sort of like the knit cuffs of gloves, without the glove part.

If you're desperate, take an old sock, cut a small hole in the heel for your thumb to fit through and then slice off the toe at a level to allow your fingers freedom of movement (turn a 'cuff' back if necessary).

If you feel terribly clever (and sew!), make a small cylinder of lycra and cut a similar thumb-hole near one end. You don't need to hem it or anything and it fits lovingly so shouldn't get in your way.

Use any glove or mitten pattern, and leave off the fingers and thumb. Switch to a non-curling stitch when you're the width of a border from the place where you want to bind off.

If a glove pattern, don't divide for the fingers; just knit on a border that comes as far down the fingers as you want. But do divide for the thumb.

Or, if you don't knit, do as I did when the kids went outside to play in the winter (mittens are notorious for not being long enough to protect wrists!). Find an old pair of socks that the toe/heel has been worn out, cut off the foot part and use the cuff part as wrist warmers. They don't look the best but it works great! I've used them here at work, too. You can cut a slit for your thumb if you think they're going to slide off.

Good luck!

Nice to see you too, Marg! ;-D

We've had a *lovely* Christmas and New Year: it's been cool and overcast most days with only one or two killers (in the form of forty degree heat and humidity through the roof). Yesterday was one of those killers and we spent most of the day icing the mice. That is, putting ice-bricks on the shelves in our mice-hice so they (the mice) don't kark it from the heat. (NB. We have mice now. *So* absorbing!)

How about you? Got any snow or coolness to waft my way? I'm happy to waft at least half my summer heat over to you...

Thenk yew, Gill. My horse stories have shrunk down to almost nothing, owing to the fact that I do mice nowadays. The Ugly Sister has indulged in another crop of GGs, though, and is currently wrestling with a seventeen-hand monster off the race track! I say 'monster' in terms of largeness, not character: his name's 'Log Pond' (!!) and he's gorgeous. Except, he only turns in one direction, which makes for interesting riding sometimes. Ugly is trying to teach him to turn the other way with 'some' success.

She hasn't fallen off him yet, but she will... she will... ;->

When I was at primary school (age up to 11) in the winter I had two mittens, no fingers or thumbs, a bit like socks, that were joined by a piece of elastic which ran up the arms of my duffel coat (remember those?) Bruce

Yeah, me too, but some of the pics are beyond funny. DD and I spent a couple of hours going through them from the beginning and by the time we'd finished we'd *both* had an asthma attack from laughing.

It was a bonding moment.

I am.

I am indeed that evil: *but not as evil as you*.

So there. ;->

So, there!!!!!! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!> It is not kind, implying that one's *dear and long-standing* friend is a Tasmanian Devil. TDs are among the most horrible creatures you could hope to meet. They rank right up there with hyenas in my book. Nasty, smelly, noisy, ugly and downright unfriendly!

Snif.

But I understand. You have no mice and therefore lack that vital je ne sais quoi...

You might want to look at motorcycle gloves... leather, with minimal seams.... my fiancee has a pair, and I just looked at them... they are very flexible, not restrictive, but stiff enough to give some support... they look like they might be just right for your needs.... hope this helps!
