Looking for a Vintage Variegated Yarn ...

I am looking for a vintage variegated yarn that was probably produced some 20-25 years ago by one of the major US yarn manufacturers. I have a photograph of it stitched up into an afghan, but I haven't noticed any postings here with attachments, so I think I'd better not post it here. The yarn is an acrylic (4-ply) with a -main- color of aqua, then has short sections of a light purple and then gold. The reason I love it is because the aqua dominates, even though the other two colors are present. I have an idea for a project if I can locate some skeins of it on eBay or somewhere else. It would help to know the manufacturer and color name, etc. Maybe you know what yarn this is...maybe you even have some???

Pls respond by email if possible and if you want me to send you the photograph I will. Also, if I'm allowed to post an attachment on this newsgroup, then let me know that as well.

Many thanks!

Thanks for asking first, Dan. Attachments are frowned on here. Unfortunately, I am sure that I don't have the yarn you are seeking, but maybe someone else will respond.

GOod luck! Katherine

Copy of offlist email sent to "dan":

Dan, I know what yarn you speak of, even without a pic... and no, you cannot post pics or any attachments at rcty. That yarn is more like 35 years old, it was called Orlon... by Sayelle, and is no longer available. If I HAD any, I'd GIVE it to you! (well, postage, lol) Noreen from rcty.

Dan, sorry you cannot post a thread with an attachment

Finding that yarn for you Dan, is a tough one, I for one would not have a clue what yarn that would be, I can barely remember what I did a minute ago, even less remembering a variagated yarn that was manufactured 20 to

20 years ago. it would help if you had a brand name of some sort. There are many brands that have gone out of business. With the great collections of yarns in the store today, you could maybe find a subsitute.

Another solution is have a spinner create the yarn for you.

Maybe someone else in the group knows this yarn

Good luck with your search

From what I remember, back in 1980-1985 the variegated yarns were always artificial fibers. (I could be wrong; I wasn't looking for such things.) Someone mentioned that it might be Orlon Sayelle, which like other acrylics often is made variegated.

Since variegated yarns come in all color combinations depending on what is fashionable, what you're looking for is a specific colorway. I believe Orlon was originally a Dupont trademark; it might be possible to contact Dupont and ask whether there is a list of their old Orlon colorway names available so you could find out what name to search for on eBay and other such sites.

I don't think that turquoise, purple, and gold colorway is going to be easy to find. It might be easier to start learning home dyeing!

Thanks to everyone for responding to my yarn "quest." Seems I am always looking for the most elusive things; and sometimes I even find them! I will continue searching eBay, ever hopeful that some old skeins will turn up eventually. I just wish the modern variegated yarns would have a dominant color like this one, and would be a little more subdued and refined looking. THANKS again!
