Need help, what needles to use to reknit old sox

I "inherited" an old pair of wool hunting socks. I've had them around thirty years and love them. I use them like slippers. they stayed in good shape til now, a moth got them year before last. they have two or three holes in one of the legs, and one heel is wearing out.

however, there is good news. I know how to knit, and the foot is about an inch to long. SO, I thought I would take out the feet, (one at a time) and re-knit each foot to a smaller size, mainly shorter, since I have exx wide feet and though I have small ankles, I think I like the socks to be biggish so they are more like slippers and can fit over other socks.

SOOOO, how do I know what size needles to get. Walmart only carries size 3.

AND, no pressure or anything, but I have to go cross country on AMTRAK tomorrow to my mother's funeral and rather than eat my way across, I thought I would knit part of the way so I can get off without a crane.

Thanks for any help. Kitty
