reducing an old pair of hunting socks

I "inherited" an old pair of hunting socks. I've had them around thirty years and love them. I use them like slippers. they stayed in good shape til now, a moth got them year before last. they have two or three holes in one of the legs, and one heel is wearing out.

however, there is good news. I know how to knit, and the foot is about an inch to long. SO, I thought I would take out the feet, (one at a time) and re-knit each foot to a smaller size, mainly shorter, since I have exx wide feet and though I have small ankles, I think I like the socks to be biggish so they are more like slippers and can fit over other socks.

SOOOO, how do I know what size needles to get. Walmart only carries size 3.

AND, no pressure or anything, but I have to go cross country on AMTRAK to get to a funeral and rather than eat my way across, I thought I would knit part of the way so I can get off without a crane.

Thanks for any help. Kitty

Cut the extra length off and flat-fell the new toe seam.

LOL, can't do THAT on the train. I guess what I basically need to know is how do I judge the yarn and guestimate the needle size needed.

I don't think it is worsted weight, I think it is a single ply yarn, but it makes up into a heavy weight sock, suitable to keep feet warm when the cold winds blow across the floor, or fills a pair of hunting boots pretty good, with room inside for two pairs of other socks.

is there such a thing as a yarn gauge? is there a chart for yarn to needle sizes?

thanks, Kitty

Well, you have to have some of the yarn, and an assortment of needles, and start swatching until you can match the original fabric or at least produce something reasonably close.

Walmart is not the only game in town for knitting needles.
