Socks finished

I have knitted like a mad! Will send them in the post to DD as a little gift, she is leaving for Brazil for 6 week, to teach "feature" journalistic. I have to post them TODAY!! This is certainly NOT Brazil-socks, but as she love to walk in the mountains, she can use them when she gets home!LOL!

I knitted the cuff multidirectional, used Iris Schreiner's pattern for Headband (x2)(Tutorial 7, ArtYarns). This patterns goes in the round, I used DP-needles, 5+1 (not 4+1!!) It is not an experiment for dp-beginners, because you turn the work all the time, and it is needles end yarns everywhere!! I was lucky when I made it!LOL!

Hi Aud,

Those are the neatest socks I've ever seen. Just looking at all the needles was enough for me to say no thank you, I'll stick to my two needles. LOL

Hugs,

Nora

Those socks are gorgeous, Aud. You should send the photos to Iris as I think she would be impressed. You must be a very fast knitter to get those done so quickly. Have you tried knitting backwards so you don't have to turn the work so much? I tried but it didn't work well for me but that might be because I knit English style.

Oh! they are lovely Aud, what a great idea to use that design for socks. You are very inventive with your knitting.

I thought that was what Aud meant (knitting backwards) when she said she "knitted the cuff multidirectional"... like back and forth kind of. *shrug* What do I know... I've never knit a sock in my life, not even the two needle ones that Nora mentioned. ;o)

They are so pretty though... if I did knit socks, I would be very tempted to try making those.

WOW Aud, Those socks are Awesome!!! They sure look complicated to make though.........of course I don't knit so it all looks like that to me :) Your DD is lucky to be getting them to keep her feet nice and comfy.

Thank you! I have sent it to the MD group. I have never knitted backwards, so there is much "turning" LOL! Aud ;-)

I must confess that I was nOT so happy when finished. I liked to do the cuffs, and it is a good feeling when it works out! But my intention was to make small, neat, girly socks. As the cuffs came out, I saw I had to use more stitches than I thought, to harmonise the shape, and then the socks became "more sporty" than the intention was. But after I tried them in my mountain boots, I felt they were nice to wear, lively coloures, and OK for that pupose. AUD ;-)

It seems to me that it could be difficult to get an exact size with diagonal knitting patterns in modular knits and entrelac. Making the my scarf was easy because the size was less important than it would be with socks.

Yes , You are right there, Jan! I could have changed the amount of sts in each pattern repeat, when I saw that the cuffs were so roomy! But I wanted to have 5 repeats, because I felt 4 would be like

*one pattern in each corner* LOL! And I prefered to use the amount of stitches in the pattern, because I was not quite familiar with it yet. But after this, I learned how the pattern was built up. I think that is the fact with the MD-knit, you have to understand the idea, and then adapt it. I feel it is pretty interesting, and open for *new* ways of doing things! AUD ;-)

My daughter is left-handed. When she was knitting a baby afghan for her first on the plane, the older lady next to her was surprised to notice that she didn't turn her work. DD didn't understand why the pattern wasn't working out right - she was just knitting one way and then the other. It had been a while since she had knit anything (her total adult product list is 3 baby afghans - one for each of her girls) and she had forgotten that you turn the work to do the next row. She was just going forward and back.

I have just thaught lefthanded pupils to knit. It worked, but , as I say: it was harder on my brain then my hands. My hands did what they should "after a while", but I was sort of "stopping" them, because my thoughts did not work "fast enough"" :-)

The worst part was that I worked with right handed beginners in the same lessons, and had to do much explanation to both.

But I am sure , if I sit down by myself, I could learn it. But that would turn out stockinette!! The MD- patterns are often garter,(knit-turn knit-turn) I do not think I could do the purl- sts the "wrong" way, at least I have to figure it out first! LOL!

---well, I could do the purl the RIGHT way, and knit back... ...OHHH this is cofusing!LOL! AUD ;-)

This reminds me of my first year in university , i was a bit tired of writing on paper moving my hand back to the other end thus started to write one side in Hebrew and back in English ,,,,, this way my mind worked overtime but my hand rested...:>:>:> mirjam

When you get the Modular Knits book, you will see directions on doing the garter stitch without turning the work. I tried it but it was so awkward that it took longer than turning the work. Since you knit continental style, it might go better for you.

OH! Directions in the book! That's good! I can see the backward garter stitches looked akward! I have to try to figure it out, but "the good old turning" works also! LOL! I got a message from the book-store that they had got the book yesterday. It went in the post to me today (from Oslo). I think I might have it Friday!!! AUD ;-)
