OT: To the Beatles/Lennon fans in the group

Marking the 25th anniversary of John Lennon's death, "Dateline" will air a documentary on the music legend's life and legacy that explores the events that led to that fateful day. Along with personal accounts by those first on the scene the night of his murder, the report includes interviews with people close to Lennon, and exclusive interviews with those who knew his killer, Mark Chapman. The broadcast will also feature exclusive audiotapes recorded by Chapman in 1991. The collection of audiotapes, which are part of a British documentary, licensed by "Dateline," offer a rare look into the mind of a killer, and give people an opportunity to try and comprehend the unexplainable murder of an icon. Hoda Kotb reports in the two-hour, special edition of "Dateline NBC."

True Lennon and Beatles fan find it in poor taste to give Chapman even MORE airtime. And once again, my favorite on-air personality is asking for your help by telling Dateline what you think of this (second paragraph down w/ link to Dateline email):

That really burns me, to no end! I have, and will again, put a comment in there... doesn't seem to be doing any good though, does it? >:o/

By the way.... the anniversary of John Lennon's death is Dec 8th if I remember correctly, not Nov 18th.... or did I just read that wrong?

In any case, that animal who shot John Lennon should get NO airtime or recognition whatsoever!

That's what I thought, too, Gem.

the paragraph about the interview with John Lennon's murerder says....."It appears that 'DATELINE' on NBC will be airing audio tapes of Lennon's killer this November 18th. Another bad move, in my opinion. Here's the press release from NBC: NEW YORK (AP) -- "Dateline NBC" wants to take you into the mind of the man who killed John Lennon. The show will mark the 25th anniversary of Lennon's death with a special that includes audio tapes Mark David Chapman recorded in 1991. The episode will also feature personal accounts of people who were first on the scene the night of Lennon's murder. The episode airs November

18th.

Do we really need to hear what this killer has to say, and do we care? Please email 'DATELINE' and tell them what you think.

Here's what *I* had to say to them in my email that I just sent off.......

That THING who shot John Lennon should get NO airtime or recognition whatsoever!! He said shortly after murdering John, that he did it to be famous for being the one who killed John Lennon. To make matters worse, the son of a bitch totally planned it all out by getting John's autograph first and then waiting for John to return to his apartment building so he could shoot him down like an animal.

A tribute to John Lennon's memory is called for, not more publicity for the creature who took his life! I, for one, will NEVER watch your program again! This is disgusting!!

I hope you get a million John Lennon fans (and yes, there are that many... and more) who also boycott your program!

Gem, Just a little "heads-up" here. Lennon was killed on December 8th. I have also "voted", but I have a feeling that this *may* be an urban myth.

Hi Katherine and Gem,

I'm sure Dateline knows the real date of John's death, but if you haven't noticed, everyone seems to be jumping on the "25th anniversary" boat. There are several books that were recently released. Even Yoko has jumped on the bandwagon and is making John's entire catalog downloadable (for a price...of course!). I think Dateline is trying to get their story in early before the actual date to guarantee the ratings. Unfortunately, they're going about it in a poor manner. I wrote an email, too, telling of my anger over their airing of the Chapman tapes. I can't remember all that I wrote, but my last words were, "Let John rest in peace...and Chapman rot in his cell."

It's a spambot. Don't vote unless you have a great firewall or router! JM2C, Noreen

It didn't come in the email, Noreen... it was on a website that linked directly to "Dateline" on NBC. And it wasn't to vote... it was to send them an email telling them your thoughts of what they are planning to air.

NBC is notorious for webbots and spybots and spambots, though. Just be careful at their site. Hugs, Noreen (FYI, ABC and FOX are bad too. CBS and CNN aren't TOO bad)

Most of the information the Dateline segment have already been posted here, so there is no need for anyone to go to their site. Anyone that wants to complain about the airing of the show/tapes can email snipped-for-privacy@nbc.com I will warn you that you will get a automated form letter/email back from Dateline thanking you for writing. If you have a problem with that, just email from a web based email account such as Yahoo or Hotmail.

Thanks Gem and Noreen.

Hi, Jenn. While I'm not the hugest Lennon fan (still think Harrison's the cutest, grin), I emailed my opinion too. Also, I correspond with a couple of 'almost' bigwigs at MSnbc, and told them what we all think....

Noreen

I mean... that's like giving airtime to John Hinkley... I didn't like Reagan BUT!!!!

I'm not the hugest Lennon fan...I prefer Paul. And forgive me if I'm repeating myself, but my sons are name: Paul Corey and Christian Julian...after Paul McCartney and Julian Lennon. ;-) I'm not having anymore kids (got 3), but if I had another boy, I would have given him the middle name of Harrison. If it had been a girl, her middle name would have been Starr. Hmmm...my daughter (Aurora Leigh(first born)) is 22...maybe I can talk her into naming her kids after George and Ringo! hahahaha...I can see her horrified look now! ROFLMAO

That would be better than if people today wanted to name their kids 50 Cent or Snoop Dogg :)

I've always been a huge Beatle fan - I joke that my iTunes shuffle sometimes sounds llike a Beatles Weekend or something.

I read that Chapman is up for parole soon. The publicity could work in the favor of those who don't want him to have it instead of him quietly getting released. Just another perspective. I guess boils down to how the information is presented.

Yeah, that was what I did too Jenn... I didn't go to their website.

Didn't you just love the automated email? They are so HAPPY to receive all the response! Do they READ their emails at all.... likely not! :o/

I've always been a huge Beatle fan too! Paul *was* my favorite for a LONG time (he was soooo cute)... then when I hit my rebellious stage, John Lennon became my favorite. ;o) I loved George's guitar playing, obviously! And Ringo was just a cutie!

I suppose that is one way of looking at it... but it still bothers me to no end that they murderers get the spotlight and even more recognition... while the victims are gone forever. Thankfully, John Lennon left some wonderful music and memories behind to carry on his legend.

I remember the first time I ever heard Julian Lennon singing on TV... I was in the other room and a chill ran right up my spine... I walked into the livingroom and although he was much younger and thinner, he looked and sounded SO much like his father it was eerie!

Gem,

My favorite changed for me too! I think they have all been my favorite at one time or another. A few years ago I got to see Paul in concert. I had never had the chance to see any of them before. It was quite an emotional experience for me.

I agree with that. And now that I think about it, if they are including the murderer's family in this, it could be that they are looking for sympathy so he can get parole. That should not happen.

Yes. And now the same is true for George. Their indivdual music appeals to me in different ways.

I remember seeing him for the first time as well and just stopping whatever I was doing to stare at the screen. BB
