ot where to find books

Hi everyone , Have a question? Where can the rare and out of print knitting books and manuals can be found? The ones like our ancestors used when they were making these kind of things for household and friends and family.

Could some one let me know.thanks .

Most of our ancestors used directions that went something like:

Cast on sufficient stitches using wool and needles on hand, work in a pattern that pleases you until the [whatever] is large enough.

Children learned to knit from example, not from books. Weldon's needlework books (reprints from schoolhousepress.com) might fit your bill.

May I add that Amazone.ca, as well as the American Amazone bookstore, also are an intermedeate for secondhand books stores in Canada and the US, it is worth checking them out as well.

There are also some older, out-of-copyright knitting manuals being sold on CD on eBay, besides all the knitting patterns and magazines from all over the world.

I have been known to find leaflets and books in Antique Stores! Just don't gasp too much at what they charge you versus what might be printed on it.

Hi Stella,

JJ just reminded me. Try the Salvation Army or City Mission stores too as some of the ladies and gentlemen turn in the old ones there.

I have used that service and found it very useful. They often even have a choice of books at various prices and conditions. I haven't tried them for knitting books, though, but for other older books that were no longer easily available.
