Cher, Have you tried drinking any of that kool-aid? :) I do have a question though - when you wash the yarn after making something does any of the color run? I've never done much dyeing before and I love the thought of using kool-aid!

Hi Debby No have never drank any of it, but dyeing is easy with it, what I do, is wet the pre-scoured fleece in a bowl of water, another tub of water goes onto the stove and has a good dollup of white vinegar in it, so too does the wetting water .. then I let the water drain from the fleece, and gently squeeze it out then put it to the pan of water, pressing it down gently, then just sprinkle a packet or two onto the fleece...depending on how much fleece or how thickly you need it dyed..lift and stir .. gently. or if rainbow dyeing use three colours and press down a little........bring to the boil and simmer til coloured water goes clear, turn off allow to cool, rinse..a couple of times and then on the last rinse use a fabric conditioner to close the cuticles of the individual strands that you opened with the vinegar.. this keeps the dye in.

No colour comes out or leaks, now just spin dry and hang somewhere warm but out of direct sunlight to dry.. done

Thanks so much Cher! I will definitely try dyeing with it. I love the whole idea of using Kool-aid. I suppose it's all the good memories from my childhood. Hot summer days when Mom would make a big pitcher of Cherry Kool-Aid to drink - with lots of ice :) Back in the days when Moms didn't worry about using all that sugar. Thanks again Cher! Have a wonderful day!!

LOL, *my* mom *always* used half the sugar it called for, and we never knew the diff. Did the same when my two were little, for same sugary concerns that mom had AND the fact that sugar was SO expensive in the eighties (Reagan-omics, phewy!) Jm2c, Noreen

We used to get Sherbert in all colours and flavours now it's not around anymore, sad cos they'd make a mint on selling it for dyeing with.. I expect some quaint old corner shop may still sell it, I'll have to look in the Lacock postoffice next time I go in and see if they still sell it.. but I thik it was taken off as being bad for your teeth years ago. We used to buy it by the quarter of a pound, it would be in a paper bag, and we'd suck our finger and stick it in and it made our fingers all orange or purple or red, and our tongues, some of us used to put it to water dissolve it and drink it...lol

That sounds like what we in the US call Pixey Stix (a little irony here) or lick-a-maid. And it's still sold here just about everywhere. It has to be one of the worst "candies" you can eat, but I loved it as a child. I never did drink it though, and I wouldn't dare eat it anymore. All that sugar is one reason I have so much silver in my mouth :) If you'd like some Pixey Stix , just let me know and I'll send you some!!

Setting my teeth on edge just thinking about it...never was a huge sweet eater me, I tried this sherbert stuff once and it was far to sweet for me.. funny how most kids love sweet stuff, yet I never did...The very occasional small bar of choc, and that was it for me....lol higz cher

I've been looking at your words since you posted, and wanting more and more to Kool aid dye again, just for the smell!!! Good thing my kids drank up all my koolaid stash I had for yarn, so I can't just grab some wool and go with it; I'd have to make a trip to the store for both Kool aid and dyeable wool....and then I'd have MORE stash crying for attention....

OMG lol....know what you mean though. I think I am sort of a collecto of dyes and fleece, I have tons of all sorts here...I normally use the Ashford dyes, but thought I'd go for the koolaid again, but not for the smell alone, but for the brighter greens and pinks that I haven't got in the Ashford lot.
