ISP hijinks

My ISP has apparently "tweaked" the news server settings to "improve" service.

What this REALLY means is that they've stopped accepting posts from who-knows-which news streams and/or have accellerated the expiration of posts to an incredibly short archive period. The end result is that substantial numbers of posts (50%? 75%? more?) are expired before I even receive them. Since I have my news client set to poll automagically those groups to which I subscribe and to suck down new headers and message bodies on a 10-minute schedule this means my ISP's news server is dumping messages almost as soon as they arrive at the server.

Bastards. Between cable, phone service and internet service with TimeWarner/RoadRunner we're paying nearly $150/mo. I am dipped if I'll pay another service for a news feed and I don't like Google's web interface.

So essentially what TWC/RR has done is drive me off of USENET. I'm not the only affected party, but I doubt the several hundred thousand of us who complain to TWC/RR will effect any change in this new "service improvement". After all, for most of us on TWC/RR, they're the only game in town.

Hell, I doubt if I'll be able to see *this message* once I post it.

Bah.

+++++++++++++

Reply to the list as I do not publish an email address to USENET. This practice has cut my spam by more than 95%. Of course, I did have to abandon a perfectly good email account...

First, thanks for telling me about TWC, I was thinking of switching to them, but now I won't. Since you don't like google here is the other free site that I use sometimes.

Yikes! That definitely isn't good. I hope something works out for you. Hopefully the new link that Nora gave you will work for you.

Gotta love (okay, you really *don't*) how ISPs "improve" things! Hey.... if it ain't broke, don't fix it!!!

There's a free one at nntp.aioe.org that gets all the post and allows posting without a signup. They go down occasionally, but the cost is right, just keep retrying.

Wooly,

has a list of free news servers. I just checked and freenews.netfront.net carries the group/permits posting. The server is a little slow and I don't know about propagation.DA

Do you know if that's a local thing? I haven't noticed any change using RR for news here.

Unless someone forwards all these responses TO Wooly, I'm afraid she's not going to *see* them. Shall I? I *have* her personal email.... Noreen

Since she posted it somehow, I figured she might see the replies. But sure, go ahead; that way she'll get them for sure.

Hi Sue,

Is there by any chance a typo as when I try to access the site it says it's not there.

[server apparently dropping posts within 10 minutes]

The other day my server was dropping posts instantly; I signed off and waited a day and it was back to normal. I think there was some kind of hacking going on.

That's not the site link, it's what you put into your newsreader where it asks for the newsserver. The site is aioe.org, but if you're wanting to read the group through a website, that won't work.

I use RR for news in NY and haven't had that problem. I usually get news twice a day, and haven't run into expired posts.

well thanx to this url from Nora, I have been able to see the 'missing' messages...gosh no wonder I seem to get muddled over what everyone is talking about, there are tons there not been brought in at the right time for me, and much quicker to scan through than using google..

thanx Nora .. cher

Hi Cher,

Your welcome, glad I could help. I heard something on the news about two batches of chickens in the UK that may have the bird flu, is that right?

Hugs,

Nora
