Questions on how to make scarves on Bond machine

If I'm in the wrong group, please let me know. Googling brought me to this particular group, so I apologize if I'm in the wrong spot.

I'm new to this whole knitting machine experience, and while it seems fairly straightforward, I'm running into some issues that I'm probably creating.

There are all these yummy yarns out there these days that I would lurve to make into scarves. For no other purpose than to have lots of scarves in yummy yarns. :)

I'd like to make narrow scarves, and the directions from the Bond manual doesn't say anything about how to set up the machine for narrow items.

So my questions are:

Do I count out a number of hooks, say 30, to get a narrow scarf, and do I take the elastic and wrap it around those hooks only? Do I then push the remaining hooks out of the way?

Should I start the yarn in the middle as opposed to the end? Or does it matter?

And when experimenting with a number 5 bulky yarn that has two strands (Moonlight Mohair from Wal-Mart), more often than not, the machine would miss one of the strands. Is this operator error or yarn not suited to the machine or both? Should the tension plate be on 4 for this yarn? Or am I best off getting a knitting board?

Thanks for ANY help!

Michele
