Re: A pattern that middle school and high schooler...

I don't know allot about knitting, I do simple scarves, just a knit or pearl but how do you slip the first stitch knitwise? Thanks, Carol In WI

Hi, Carol! You don't knit or purl the first stitch at all, just move it to your right-hand needle AS IF you were going to knit it, IE, insert you needle AS IF you were going to knit it, but instead, just slip it over to the right-hand needle. Then knit the next stitch as you normall would. There are many variations on this, what slipping does is give a nice selvedge edge. I personally prefer purling the verly last stitch of a row, then slipping as if to knit the first stitch. I've also knit the very last stitch, then on first stitch of next row, slip as if to purl. I see that Noreen hsa explained it nicely, so I will just add that I prefer to slip the first stitch as though I were knitting, while she perfers to do it as though purling. Either way, you get a nice edge, as she mentioned.
