This discussion is extremely interesting, and I'll be anxious to see what you come up with. I've no ideas to ad to what everyone's said 'cept that perhaps you should do holders for both crochet hooks as well as knitting needles -- many people who do one also do the other. They could match, and much like (gee, was it Cher?) said, sold in a matching set (with the yarn holder to match too!) would be extremely attractive to buyers. Rather than stashing and hiding our needles and hooks, they could be handy and pretty at the same time. :o) (Said I had no ideas to add, but I've just expanded your project from one piece to THREE! LOL)
