Here's a radical idea: stay in touch with them whilst they are alive and then others around them will get the notion that you give a shit, and give you a call when they croak. (Pretty far out but it just might work.)
How much are you hitting up the group for the donation? Actually anyone who is inclined to send you money this time probably has a brain tumor themself and actually should keep the money against future expenses.
