Nora is our afghan expert... considering how many afghans she has made (and is still making), so I will leave that up to her (or anyone else) to answer as I haven't made a striped afghan in many years and don't remember what I did to it. ;o)
On a side note: I stopped to make my sister a 'after surgery' doll,
