Re: VERY OT: the US govt's (well FEMA) response to the tornadoes..

New administrations all over the world, are regulating everything and than use regulations , not to give enough help , or not to Declare the the declaration that will leggaly open the gates of those help agencies that were built to give this help ,, We have a similar problem here , we had a war and our prime minister didn`t legally `declare` it as war , which legally didn`t allow for opening emergency places . storage etc,,,, Private groups of citizens took upon themselves to help those in need,,, This is an ALL GLOBAL phenomenae,,, Now adays whenever somebody calls me to Donate, i am fully aware that THIS HELPED the Authorities, to minimize their help [ for which they take taxes , men power etc,,, ] Years ago i told aquaintances and friends that there IS SOMRTHING WRONG , in this constant asking for donations,, That countires are slowly Crawling into Tottal disregard for the needs of people , This a kind of modern Slavery, We are all happy watching tv and traveling , but with our taxes we feed a growing group of people, who don`t serve Our needs as people. Education is worse, people are encouraged to learn ,but not to THINK, Not to compare ,,, This are bad times for all .. mirjam

Had it not been for private citizens, faith groups, community aid groups etc., we in New Orleans would still be in desperate straits - even worse than we are. It seems that most of the government money went to large, well-connected firms (many of the same ones which are making huge profits from the current war in Iraq and Afghanistan)and very little of it filtered down to actual people.

I still have friends who are living on the second floor of their home, cooking in a microwave or on a charcoal grill and washing cooking pots in the bathtub.

I have friends who are still living in a camping trailer because their government money has not yet come through.

I have friends who teach at a local college and consider themselves extremely lucky to have been able to snag a cramped student apartment, which they will probably have to vacate before September.

I have friends who had to move away, because the businesses which employed them have not been able to get a government grant - or even a loan - to get through this period and regroup.

The storm was one and a half years ago.

the big problem is there *is no FEMA* anymore. Shrub sucked it into his joke department of "Homeland Security". lee

nodnodnod, I *know*. Here's MY idea regarding FEMA and it's management. Each time zone would haveit's own Dept and *head*/*leader*. The east coast would be most readily prepared for hurricanes and such. The central time zone would be most readily prepated for tornadoes, etc.. And on and on.... JM2C, Noreen

PS, Homeland Security and the Patriot Act are the biggest joke of the early 21st century.

actually FEMA was even more regional than just by time zone (now there's a rant... Shrub claiming to "save energy" by mucking with DST. i absolutely loathe DST). northeast, southeast, central, midsouth...

we need to kick Congress into repealing ALL of the Patriot Act. and, yes, Homeland Security is a joke. it will only lead to people like me "disappearing" without a trace some night, into those secret prisons Shrub won't talk about... lee

I LIKE DST, I only wish it was YEAR ROUND! :D

Ever hear Shrub's spiel on how he doesn't use email? Gee, I wonder WHY??

Lee, as much as I complain about him, and even have an impeach Bush button on my blog, I'm sure I'll dissappear right along with ya! We'll sit and knit and bitch about Shrub, grin! Noreen

It's probably just as well. Considering all the negative emails I've sent to the White House over the years, he'd probably be ready to invade Sweden by now!!!

Don't worry, I'll send y'all yarn care packages via the Red Cross!

Oh please, let's just keep standard time year round. All this did for me is make me turn on my lights in the morning instead of earlier in the evening. Whoop-de-doo. And then I have the trouble of explaining to my youngest that even though it's not completely dark outside it really is time for her to get ready for bed.

Yep. Oh, I'd like to extend a big "Howdy!!" to any FBI, CIA, NSA, and any other officials who may be spying on this post.

I'll be right there with all y'all. I'm on so many progressive email lists, human rights lists, ACLU, etc. that I'm sure these folks not only are reading in but are being bored to death over just how boring and mundane my life really is

But yet he admitted that 'someone' "showed him" the internet video of Saddam's slaying....

Better use the Salvation Army, the Red Cross is unreputable, LOL.

I too would like DST all year. I'm not one to voluntarily see a sunrise :P I much prefer the light at the end of the day!

Well, you'd need more than just keeping clocks set on DST year round for that. The earth's natural progression makes sunset later as summer approaches and earlier as winter approaches. In December sunset would be somewhere around 5:45 or so. Besides, the default would be to remain on standard time and not DST; that makes no sense whatsoever and would distance this country even more from the rest of the world.

I don't particularly like getting up when it's completely dark outside, like it was this morning when I went out to get my paper. Maybe you can sleep until whenever sunrise is, but I sure can't, and I know very few working folks who can.

LOL! Our long (and getting longer) list of similarities is pretty funny :)

I wasn't seriously proposing this be done. I was simply saying that I like the extra light at the end of the day we get with DST.

And yes, I can sleep later than most. That doesn't mean I don't work. In fact, quite a lot of people don't work the "typical" work hours. I say that because my job is to ask people about their jobs, including when they work!
