Marie you can lend me some of yours Anyday ,, esp those so kind about knitting ,,,,, yesterday had a little WIN ,,, a woman who looked down on me for knitting for some time ,,,, met me and asked if i won`t mind knitting a bag for her!!!!! of course i said No thank you , but inqured for what purpose she Suddenly needed that uninteligent Technique,,, she said [are you sitting ladies???] That Everybody who is Fashion Concious NOW !!!! has Some knitted item , and that since her friends Know she loathes it , she [are you sitting ?????] Can`t pretend , nore show off a Sweater , but a bag she can show off alot of time and tell them she made it !!!!! Now i became very bad ,,, i S M I L E D SWEEEEEEETLY , and said ;So waht is the problem Knit one yourself ,!!!!!! and off i went ....... I must say we went to a Mask Exhibition yesterday ,, and wec saw many knitted /crocheted bags ,,,, also met a woman , [with not such an inspired crocheted one !!] who said she sells them like Fresh Buns , and that many women show them off as madeby themselves ,,, this sort of made me giggle ,,,, mirjam

I knew that China has done quilting for some time (I've seen some of their older style jackets with quilting done on them). :o)

And I don't know about anyone else, but I had always considered that the quilting in the US was likely brought (or passed on to future generations) by the pilgrims who mostly came from Holland and Germany didn't they? I love watching the Antiques Roadshow and seeing some of the quilts, blankets, rugs, etc with all the intricate detailing that people have had in their families for years and never thought that they would be worth in the thousands of dollars. :o)

Good for you Mirjam....he he he This week I made up close to a hundred crocheted shamrocks (with safety pins on the back for pinning to shirts) to give out to my co-workers and some of the customers. I must say that St Patricks Day is a big thing around here. All the neighborhood pubs have goings on and lots of Irish music and dancing....(too bad I've been sick all week). I gave some of the shamrocks to some of the elderly people that come over from one of the care centers next to our store. One man, who must be close to 90 got such a kick out of his shamrock, he made multiple trips into the store all day and showed it to everybody, laughing....funny how people like little free things like that. While patching torn clothes was probably done every where ,, the first quilting ideas were brought to Europe with the Crusaders coming back from the east !!!! And the first one to take it over to the `colonies` were woman prisoners who were sent there and probably wer cold and poor. There are ship records ttelling about the prisoners on boat doing this craft. mirjam

Quilting was high fashion in England in the 16th century. There are quilted and embroidered bed hangings from then. Probably every segment of society did quilting or bought quilted things, as appropriate and as needed.
