Changes in attitude re hand knit products

I may have written once before about my soon-to-be-dil asking me why I bothered to knit an afghan when I could go out and buy a blanket. Well, not too long after that discussion, she sent me a picture of a hat she wanted. She asked if I would knit that for her in exchange for a picture I wanted painted. I knit away and she has had the hat for two years now. So far no painting, but that is just fine with me. However, the other night she started bragging about that hat, about how people at the university come up to her all the time asking where she got it, and she is so happy to tell them that it is a one of a kind hat and that they cannot buy one like it anywhere. Now she is hinting that she wants a magic scarf because one of her friends has one. I can't get one done for Christmas with three pair of socks still needing to be finished, but it will be on the list for the new year, too.

Wish I had something I wanted to start for myself for a NYCO. I am working on a beautiful F/F shawl in black for myself for the wedding in May, so perhaps that will count as a cast on as I do some increases on New Years' Eve.

Hi

Why don't you use this shawl so that you it gives you another reason to get it finished.

I had a similar experience with a SIL. When I first went back to knitting, she literally laughed at me for it. Then a few years later she got on the scarf bandwagon and was so excited to show me her yarns and what she was making. It wasn't easy to be only excited about someone discovering the joy of knitting, as I was a bit annoyed too. It's like now that she was doing it, it was cool...which it is, but it also was before when I was doing it :)

There is still the stereotype out there about knitting. And as is true for most stereotypes, if you look, you can find examples that fit. I try to just be happy knowing that those who believe those ideas are just not as smart as I am. Heh.

I have to say that I found the Kmart ad to be amusing and didn't see it as a slam against knitting. I saw it as poking fun at ugly or inappropriate sweaters :)

Susan , I read your letter with great amusement , sorrow and understanding. I do understand your very true reaction. As to Her asking for a hat, it is partly her Admitting that she sees the uniqueness of the making as justified [ see her bragging about it NOW ] ... Buit i am sad she hasn`t given you the promised exchnage,,,, not nice, not fair. >Now she is hinting that she

How about giving her a big note with a promise of giving her FREE Knitting lessons , esp ,,, intended for scarves shawls etc,,, you could even add a present of the needed threads +needles .....

What about a neat Hat or scarf for you !!!! mirjam

BB ,,, i had to smile and sigh with you story .... years ago i had people come into my house and when they saw my appliqued fiberart or craft, they would ask,`if i haven`t enough money to buy real pictures ???", now same women , sometimes do some textilic works, and no matter if it comes from a ready made kit, is not their idea ... etc,,, "They are now Making Creative Embroidery, or Artistic soft sculpture"etc... you know what i mean. As to knitting etc,,,,, i now meet many women , who mocked me over the years ,, with "you still wear that OLD fashioned Knits ", or " Crochet ???? what are you an Old witch ???" ,,,, and Guess who is now knitting according to their words ,, " the most original exguisite sweaters ,,, I could never [ according to them] copy..... " I know what you feel , Not only were they laughing at us all this years , but now that they enjoy many developed threads and trend ideas, that were developed Because so many of US stayed on knitting /crocheting etc. Now they look down on us as if we have no clue what we do.... lately i sat in my friend`s shop ,,, When in strolled this woman , GEEH she said i am happy somebody still sells wool, i suddenly have this urge to knit [ i burned to ask her if she saw the news item about it being trendy ????], Of course i know all about knitting, much better than all the amateurs who sit here. ,,, she chose a wool [mixed with acrlyric] , my friend asked her how much she needed , she had no clue, My friend asked her politely what she wanted to knit ,,, she asked if my friend doesn`t have a mag ,,,, My friend offered her a knitting mag , the women chose a complicated vest,, and than asked for detailed instruuctions as well as how to cast on ,,,,, But somrthing is changing , on my walk in town on Thursday i saw Many sweaters ,, ready made , but with a aaded applique of a hand knit or hand crochet flower or heart or animal ,,,, i also saw Jeans shirts with appliqued knitted flowers ,,,,

That is the fact !!!!! i have ENORMOUS pleasyre explaining the Moebious to just those people who stereotype me as Stupid knitter ... mirjam

I also find it annoying when someone picks up on something you've been doing for years that they made fun of, and all of a sudden it becomes the "thing." My sister has done that for years - Susan, why don't you just buy (fill in the blank). Oh well, I guess that imitation is a form of compliment... Now, sister Carol is a top-rate quilter, even though she was very lukewarm years ago about my quilting. However, she is now very supportive of my handwork, and probably would like an afghan...

Well, getting *old* sure beats the alternative (grin). One of my favorite Christmas gifts was a generous gift card to the LYS and I sure made good use of it. In fact, I'm still enjoying all the yarns I bought with it. Marie and the cats

I know I am not getting old, so not only is it uncool its that he thinks that only old people knit, crochet and stuff. I asked for the yarn knowing it will be used well. Andrea

Hi Andrea,

I received four skeins of yarn for Christmas from a lovely friend of mine and I was thrilled with it. I have to tell you though, when my DH saw it, the first thing he wanted to know was what I was going to make him with it. LOL

My Secret Santa from an online message board bought me 2 skeins of yarn so that I could make myself purple mittens, since she couldn't find any to buy for me. I am very excited to have a project just for me! And I'm definitely not old. And I am definitely cool!
