Sock-blocking?

Sounds like "Fox in Socks," doesn't it? Well, I'm happy with my Gansey socks (except for that accursed Channel Island cast-on), but while the cable and the diagonal lines show up nicely, the snowflake pattern on the front/top just doesn't. Do I really have to block SOCKS to make the purl sts all stand out evenly? I don't think just stretching over my shin would do it...and it won't stretch anyway, these socks are definitely too big for me. Am thinking of lengthening the foot and foisting them on DH.

But anyway...what do you all suggest?

Back in the middle ages and renaissance all knitted socks were blocked, on sock forms. If you bend a wire coat hanger into a U-shape wide enough to block the ankle part, it should be enough; the foot part isn't likely to show anyway. Or just stuff them with towels, or stretch them over a family size can of vegetables.

Thanks, Tamar, that sounds like it will work. But...then...I won't be able to toss those socks into the washer, will I. Hm...

Maybe, maybe not, but it's worth a try. Somehow I have the idea that the first blocking will somehow set into the wool. If not, just keep the bent coat hangers as laundry equipment.
