Substitute for...

My favorite fine yarn, and the yarn I was planning to use to whip out Christmas gifts on the Duo80, is out of stock at Elann:

have a suggestion for something economical and of similar fiber content and weight that is NOT from KnitPicks? Jaggerspun Zephyr qualifies on the fiber merits but is a bit too pricy for me to use for a dozen scarves!

selection may be limited, but service is excellent. DA

I'll bet you already know this, but Elann has a service where they'll e-mail you when the stock levels of a particular product increase. There's a note on that yarn that says new stock expected before Nov 1, so keep a watch on it, or click for the e-mail.

What about something from Colourmart.com? They don't have an alpca/ silk blend but there is cashmere/silk or plain silk.

I checked ColourmartUK, too - color availability there seems to be a crapshoot and right now they have a LOT of yellow-leaning blends which unfortunately don't work terribly well on the sorts of complexions I need to knit for :(

UPDATE

I found an online vendor I'm going to shill for, because she has stock, she has pricing, and she ships lightning-fast (I submitted my order around 4pm, she's already packaged my yarn and has it labeled for USPS to pick up tomorrow!).

price on Jaggerspun Zephyr is astonishingly low and she has most colors in stock. I won't say here what that price is but if you're in the US and you like working with this yarn you need to hie thee over and order it.

Hint: next best price I could find for the standard 2oz put-up is more than double the price at the above site.

NAYY, just a happy customer - and my yarn isn't even here yet :D

Yeah that's the one draw back with Colourmart. Gotta say I love their one price for all and free shipping though - for those of us out back of beyond it's really appreciated.

Good to hear you've got a substitute.

Wow Wooly - this looks fantastic. For me to buy that same yarn at Ram Wools in Winnipeg is $13.95 Cdn, and converted into US dollars would be approximately $14.40 each.

I HAD put myself on a yarn diet - but you, you bad girl - have me thinking I need to get some Zephyr. I've been seriously coveting it for a long time.

heh, heh - enabler!!! I just had a quick look through my bookmarked yarn stores, and there was Sara's Yarns. I must have looked at their stuff before, but I can't believe I didn't buy the Zephyr. I'm going to have a look through my lace books........ ;>D

Yeah well, I swore to the DH at the beginning of the year that I'd work out of stash all year and try to whittle it down somewhat. For the most part I've done that so I felt justified in ordering a dozen different colors of the Zephyr...

The Elann stuff I ordered earlier today is for commissioned knitting and thus does not count against stash.

Hehehehe!

Aaah, you did get some of the Peruvian Baby Silk? It looks quite yummy too.

A DOZEN different colours of the Zephyr? Oh man, I'm jealous.

I love the stuff. It's excellent handknitting yarn, wears well, drapes well, even has some memory, which is unusual for alpaca and moreso for silk. I'll have the commissioned caps finished by the time the Baby Silk gets here, and I will run scarves off on the Duo80 almost faster than I can think about it.

Don't be very, I won't be keeping much of it for myself. I have my own Christmas scarves to make :D

Tomorrow I'm doing a spinning demo at school for the 1st graders, and next week more of the same for a couple of other classes. I'm also teaching some of the other moms to knit some morning between now and Thanksgiving, and I need to put the CSM back together and run some socks quick-like.

Ugh, so much knitting, so little time!

Do anyone know if vintage sock machine needles have ceramic on them?
