Yarn search

I need recommendations for a REALLY soft, fine, acrylic baby yarn. I have been asked to make another baby blanket, and I prefer to make them with a fingering weight so that they are not too heavy for baby. The last one I made was with Brunswick yarn "Sweetpea", which was already discontinued when I bought it. It really is lovely, a baby fingering weight brushed acrylic which looks and feels just like a mohair, but without the shedding problem and is machine washable and dryable.

Most of the baby yarns I have seen in my lys, or in Hancock's or JoAnn's are just not very soft - in fact some of them are downright hard - certainly not anything I would use on a new baby.

Does anyone have any recommendations or sources? I think I have two skeins of pale blue left over in the Sweetpea, but a baby blanket will take about six.

Hi Olwyn, I know you're looking for fingering weight, but I just bought Caron's Simply Soft (no dye lot yarn) that is worsted weight, but doesn't seem too heavy/thick. It is very soft and has a nice sheen to it. I got it in JoAnn's and I think it was about $2.50 for a 6 oz skein. Didn't know if this would be helpful... Good luck with your project!

Olwyn Mary,

I recently made a baby blanket using Lion Brand Baby Soft. It is a sportweight yarn, and I doubled it for the pattern. I really liked the way the yarn felt as I knit it and it washed and dried very nicely.

Hope this helps.

Hi Olwyn Mary,

What I use for the baby sweaters and afghans is Red Heart Super Sport yarn and I buy it from Smileys as they have the color I love, baby pastel. You have be buy at least $30 and the shipping and handling is something like $9.95, but the service is great.

I used Bernat Softee Baby for my first baby project, loved it, and have stuck with it ever since.

This is what I have used also. First used it to make blankets for my twin DGD that are now 5 and have used it for the 2 DGS also. I find it at Michaels. HTH Carol in TN

Yes, Bernat Softee is what I use for the preemie sets I make. I find it at WalMart and I think it is in the Herrschner's catalog, too.
