Question

I am new to machine embroidering, and I'm very confused about one thing. I have asked for help on the Bernina message boards, and from 5 different people at my local Bernina dealer (including the owner) and have gotten some very different answers about this. I have the Bernina Deco 650 with the 4x4 hoop. I know that my machine will not embroider anything bigger than that. There is a Brother/Babylock card out there that I just love, and many of the designs on it are for 4x4 or smaller. However, many of the designs are made for larger hoops. My question is, will my Deco read and embroider the designs on that card which are 4x4 or smaller, or will it simply not read any of them at all. On the allbrands.com site it says it's not for use on 4x4 fields. Patrick, on the Bernina boards, who is MOST helpful and knowledgeable, said it WOULD read those designs. Four of the women at my Bernina dealer also said it would read those designs. The owner of the shop, however, said it would not. Unfortunately, they do not have the card in stock for me to try, and are not terribly interested in being that helpful about it. Has anyone here tried to use Brother/Babylock cards with some designs that are larger than 4x4 on the Deco (but only used the smaller designs)? I know I can't use the designs that are bigger, but can I use the designs that are smaller? I would be much obliged to anyone who can help! Thanks! Julie

Just exactly which card is it? From the sounds of your last reply, are you thinking about card 14 or 31??? If so, they are made entirely for the PE series machine - the special hoop they refer to is probably the multi-position hoop for that machine. The the designs on 14/31 can be done without it, it's just easier with the ~4x7" 3 position hoop.

The multi-position hoop has three location settings/clips instead of just one - larger designs are accomplished by the overlapping of 4x4 areas - hoop is pre-deteremined, or you could use the templates, mark your fabric, and there you have them...

Side Note - some PE/Deco folks are mis-lead into believing that the multi-position hoop will enable you to do the larger size (5x7 continuous) designs - not true. The designs would have to be split into (again) overlapping 4x4 areas...

Also - (I'm presuming they won't anyway, but just for your info) most Brother cards are packaged in a cellophane cover that is "sealed" with re-sealable adhesive - I used to open/reseal cards on a regular basis for exactly your need, and it does not hurt or change the card in any way, and the packaging is fine, as long as they are careful in undoing them. Most of my cards are still in the original cellophane covers (over the hard case/cardboard), and I've used each and every one many times.

Best of luck - Beowulf
