Floss storage boxes

Santa was good to me and brought me a cozy chair to stitch in and now I am want to reorganize my stash so it is near while I work. I especially want my floss to be at hand.

Currently, I have my floss wound on plastic bobbins in a Darice box. This works but I would like something that is more attractive so I don't always have to put away my toys like my mommy taught me. =) I am looking at one of these

but there isn't enough floss storage space. By my count, I have 369 DMC colours (oops, when did that happen!) and many more of Kreinik and silk and overdyes. Even with some of them not fully wound, I have the equvalent of about 300 fully wound bobbins and these cabinets only hold 200!Does anyone know of any other options out there that would let me keep my flosses next to my chair? And don't tell me I can just put the extras in the drawers - I have other plans for them! TIA Addie

It holds 200 full bobbins on plastic. If some of the bobbins were half full and on paper maybe..? Judy

I hate that paper one's and my bird loves them. =) I figure that with all of my floss that are on bobbins, I'm at close to 300. I just wish there were a second tray...

And I don't mind the Darice boxes, but they don't look like a piece of furniture...I would like something I can leave out even when the company comes over. That's why these wood ones have caught my eye...

Oh, my... that cherry box is absolutely gorgeous...I guess it would be a little hard for my friend from Lee-on-Solent to smuggle in with her in May, though, wouldn't it???

Soooooo pretty. I need to check the web and see what the US options might be.

Thank you for posting this Addie, and congrats on your stitching chair!

Those are lovely boxes.

How about looking for a lovely large cigar style box that would fit your project bits and sliding the the Darice boxes into a drawer.

Hmm...it doesn't look like this got through, so I'll try again. Apologies if I end up with a double post...

Yes, but I can't find an online picture to point you to :-( If you email me (my return address works) a working email address, maybe I can take a picture and email it to you. Or, if you send me a snail mail address I could mail the ad to you. The company does advertise in Inspirations magazine, and I'm looking at the ad in issue 46 right now, if you have that (I'm sure it's in other issues as well). The company is Heirloom Collections Pty Ltd. You can email them at snipped-for-privacy@ozemail.com.au. Address is PO Box 29, Yarra Glen, Victoria, Australia 3775. They have beautiful wooden boxes with brass fittings. You can get them with or without the threads already in them. The first three below are cases (with handles, so you can carry them). The last one is a cabinet you could set on a table. Prices are without threads and in Australian dollars:

Project box, 265mm x 265mm, 72 bobbins, $280 Compact box, 570mm x 470mm, 528 bobbins, $440 Large box, 700mm x 570mm, 702 bobbins, $590 Treasure chest (3 drawers plus top lid opens) 500mm x 325mm x 230mm, 920 bobbins, $740

For international orders: +61 3 9730 1239

Not cheap, but they are absolutely gorgeous.

Best wishes, Ericka

I highly recommend Patches 'n Planks. They are beautiful to look at and hold a ton of floss. I got mine a few years ago at CATS in Hershey. The couple that is Patches 'n Planks are the nicest people. When I got mine in the mail it took me about half an hour to get all the wrapping and packaging removed. There was no way that thing was going to be damaged by some delivery guy.

Addie, depending on whether you live in the UK or are just interested in ordering from a UK source, you might be interested in a US product. Yield House, sold through Renovators Supply and others, has a nice map chest with six shallow drawers, that comes unfinished and in several stains. Using heavy poster board, I divided one drawer into 13 front-to-back rows that hold more than 500 colors on plastic bobbins. The other drawers hold fabrics, other fibers and small accessories.

And the top holds a lamp, a cup of tea, and whatever you're working on at the moment. Go to

and search for "map chest."

Good to know Anne, they are gorgeous and would look nice sitting on top of some other chest. I will keep this in mind with all of my other options. To make it all more challenging, we were also given $100 to Pier 1 that we would like to incorporate into whatever we do. They have some nice Asian style chests that store my fabrics, but nothing that would store floss well, so the hint of options continues.

Oooh, that would be a nice idea...but pricey. I am in Canada, so I am not stuck on any options. I've bookmarked the page and looked on eBay as well! I can see alot of things stored in one of these....thinking...thinking...

That's a great idea - I've long thought an old fashioned dentist's cabinet would work well also. Lots of storage, shallow and deep drawers, often lined nicely.

Try looking for an "apothecary's chest" - I love the look of those and I know a local Pier 1 had them for a while.

Lucky you!

Does anyone know if our former member, Jim Mc Namara, is still making those gorgeous cabinets he used to make? I miss hearing from him...

I usually lurk here quietly. I can't stitch much anymore myself but I like to keep in touch with trends.

But when I did stitch I used a lovely old cutlery canteen (three drawers on legs) for thread, patterns, tools, etc. It had been relined, but it worked a treat. It has been passed on to another stitcher now, and she is very happy with it.

A former neighbour had a metal tool box painted by her sister in a beautiful floral design and it was just exquisite. You would never have recognised it as a tool box. I think it had 6 shallow drawers and 2 deeper ones, and I remember it held everything! Her Hubby put it on castors for her. They had jointly made it for her birthday one year.

Another friend is currently using an Ikea cabinet unit that has shallow drawers, and she and her hubby fitted the drawers out with dividers to suit her needs.

Good luck in your search.

And Happy New Year to all the stitchers here.

Perhaps by two? (Space for 400 fully wound bobbins, and more drawers for the other plans you have.)

Hmmmm, and two would still be cheaper than a lot of the other options...
